The grandson of Elvis Presley, son of Lisa Marie Presley, committed suicide on Sunday, July 12th, via a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 27 years old.

Did you notice that I didn’t mention his name either in the first paragraph or in the title of this blog entry? There’s a reason for that. Read on. I’m going to start over.

Astrology And The Death Of Benjamin Keough

Benjamin Keough, a musician and professional back-up vocalist, committed suicide on Sunday, July 12th, via a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 27 years old.

See what I did there? One approach treats Benjamin Keough as an individual human being, and the other one places him purely within the context of his famous family. The reason I did that? Have a look at his birth chart.

You’ll notice that the Sun is in the 12th house. Sometimes that’s a sign that a person is prone to having mental health issues, but it’s far from a surefire marker. More importantly in this case, the Sun in the birth chart is your identity, the part of you that knows you are you, if you will. Now look at the aspects to that point in his birth chart. The only close major aspect comes from his Moon. Think of the Moon as the part of your birth chart that wants what It wants. And that Sun and Moon duet literally stood apart from the rest of his chart.

Imagine for a moment you were Benjamin Keough. There is absolutely no way to escape the legacy of being part of such a famous family, especially when you consider that his passion and talent led him to the same line of work as his grandfather. Even if he didn’t go around advertising who his grandfather was, plenty of people in his industry would know. And if you look at him, I’ll bet that many of those meeting him for the first time said something like “hey, you look like Elvis!”

Image trying to form your own identity, with that going on.

And if you look at pictures of Benjamin online, no matter what, you will always see the sadness in his eyes. Just like with another, better known performer I wrote about a few years ago.

Benjamin was born during a Void of Course Moon. Normally I only use the Void of Course Moon when it comes to mundane astrology and for timing when using electional astrology. But over the years I’ve noticed a tendency towards depression for people born with their moon in this condition. Don’t take that to the bank, but it’s something I’ve noticed.

The planet in Benjamin’s chart that knew who he was has been battered by transits from Saturn and Pluto for at least the last couple of years. This would be difficult for anyone, look for someone struggling with depression, it could be unbearable. Under the influence of a close square from Saturn at 29 degrees Capricorn to his Sun, with the transiting Sun and Jupiter energizing his Mars, and with the Moon that day square his Mars?  It’s easy to see the astrological reasons why he made his final decision.

On the other hand, I refuse to believe that astrology is completely fatalistic. This is one of the great problems with suicide though: everybody is left with unanswered questions. Questions like “could I have done more to stop this?” “Should I have done more?” And “why didn’t I see the warning signs?”

This is one reason why, no matter what, you should not solve your problems with suicide. That, and I genuinely believe that all of us are here for a reason and need to be here. Please: if you find recent transits have been too much to carry for you and you are thinking about ending it, please find someone to talk to. The world would be diminished by your absence.
