(This is part of the “Ask An Astrologer” series, where I occasionally try to demonstrate how getting a consultation can genuinely help and provide real guidance, using real-life examples. Want to find out for yourself? There’s a link to my e-mail at the bottom of this blog entry.)

Dear LK: Last time (click here for that if you didn’t see it), I spoke about the emotional issues you are facing, where they are coming from, and when that light at the end of the tunnel is showing up. That’s all fine and well, but there is also some more practical guidance I can give you, based on your birth chart, with some of the things you’re facing.

First though, as far as any emotional issues you are facing: I know they are complicated, but there is at least one possible thing you can do about it that is actually quite simple: I have noticed that people facing depression who have their Sun or Moon in a Fire Sign (like your Sun in Sagittarius) can quite often get good results with their moods by increasing the amount of physical movement they do. No, I’m not just saying “walk it off” exactly, but that can sometimes make the situation better. Give it a try.

Now, let’s talk a little career guidance. Astrologically, “career” breaks down into three separate factors: the 10th House, the 6th House, and the Midheaven. The 6th House is your general work habits and the daily routine of whatever job you do. The 10th house addresses the career itself, and the Midheaven is also related to the career — but is different. Think of it this way; if you are a dog groomer, that’s your career (the 10th House). but the Midheaven is more like that inner voice that keeps asking “do I want to be a dog groomer when I grow up? Is this really what I want to be doing with my life? Wouldn’t I be happier in a job with fewer fleas?” and so on. (click here for more about the Midheaven and career, if you like.)

Your Midheaven and your 10th house are both ruled by Jupiter, and as a Sagittarius your Sun is also ruled by Jupiter — and in your specific case the Sun is the ruler of your 6th house. That makes it especially important that we look at the role of Jupiter in your birth chart.

Like most placements in most people’s birth charts. there are some good things and some bad things we can see about your Jupiter. First of all, it is in Cancer, which is the Sign where Jupiter is exalted. That makes your Jupiter good and strong and says some very nice things about your career potential.

There are a couple of things holding it back though. Remember last time, when I mentioned that your Saturn Neptune conjunction can be an indicator of some form of emotional wounding? That conjunction is closely opposite your Jupiter. That can be tough for career in your case, but think of it this way: in your chart Saturn is in the Sign that it rules, but it is opposite Jupiter in its exaltation. I’m oversimplifying here, but exaltation is a stronger placement than rulership. Ultimately Jupiter can win this tug-of-war.

The opposition to your Neptune makes things a little fuzzy, as Neptune always does. So naturally we can say that if Jupiter is in charge of your career, Neptune is making things vague. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though. Neptune also has a strong association with “making the world a better place.” Whatever you do for a living, you’re unlikely to enjoy it if the only reward is the paycheck.

Look at the overall aspects to your Jupiter in your birth chart. Yes, that opposition is making things kind of funky, but please note that Jupiter is in a trine to your Moon. Even better, your Moon is in a sextile to your Neptune, and Neptune rules your Moon. So we have a “positive feedback loop” here between your Moon, your Jupiter, and your Neptune. This says to me that ultimately you can be very successful at something.

Sure, but what kind of career path should you be aiming for with all that? Choosing a career is a lot more complicated than it once was. Five hundred years ago, if you were from a family of farmers, you’d almost certainly end up being a farmer (unless you were a woman, in which case your career path would almost certainly be “marrying a farmer and raising his kids”).

So, your best bet when it comes to choosing a career is to throw these various elements together and see what you come up with:

  • You have a strongly aspected Moon in Pisces that is also aspecting your career ruler, Jupiter. Moon in Pisces is well known for being empathetic — sometimes too empathetic for its own good.
  • Your career ruler is in your fifth house, which has a strong association with creativity (and possibly children).
  • Both of the above factors, plus the Sagittarius Midheaven, point to doing something compassionate or creative or (as you put it to me yourself in that last blog entry) “to help people.”

So, not everyone is equipped to make a living off of “what they want to do with their lives”… but you certainly are. So, prepare for that now. Do some research, look around, and by the time that upcoming Jupiter transit to your Midheaven hits, you should be in fine shape to get on the path you want to be on — even if you don’t know what that path is right now. You’ve got this!
