matthew currie astrology chiron in ariesChiron enters Aries on Monday. If you’re a big fan of reading about astrology on the internet you’ve probably already encountered the phrase “wounded healer” more than anyone reasonably should. That, and you’ve probably come to the conclusion that Chiron is ruler of emotional pain, specifically the kind one gets from one’s childhood or early experiences.

What’s clear something up right now: Chiron in astrology is useful, but it can also be used as an excuse to wallow in your own suffering. In no way am I dismissing anyone’s emotional pain or psychic wounding. But there can be a certain satisfaction to be had in yelling about one’s suffering rather than facing up to it and dealing with it.

In Greek mythology, Chiron was a centaur. Unlike the other centaurs — who were basically a bunch of uncivilized angry drunken frat boys with some distinctly rape-y qualities — Chiron was the embodiment of civility. He taught medicine and music to the gods and many Greek heroes. But when astrologers tell the story of Chiron, they tend to forget that he was also a skilled warrior.

So I think that when it comes to Chiron in Aries, we should perhaps not dwell on the whole “wounding thing.” Yes, deep emotional wounds are real and they hurt. But it is also possible transmute that pain into something that makes you and everyone around you better for it.

I’m going to suggest that Chiron in Aries will require an Aries approach. Recognize your pain. Understand where it came from. If you need help or counseling for it, get it. But we all need to move on from the slights and injustices that hurt our feelings.

Don’t be afraid to shout back at your pain. You can stand up for yourself now in ways that you couldn’t when all that happened. Get help, get advice, then get to war with your own suffering and make it serve you. Turn to that part of yourself and hand it the eviction notice it so richly deserves.

As Bjork once put it:

Stand up
You’ve got to manage
I won’t sympathize
Anymore
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
You’re alright
There’s nothing wrong
Self sufficiency please!
And get to work

Now, it’s time to dry your eyes and get on with making yourself and your world better. You can do this.
