matthew-currie-astrology-saturn pluto capricornOne thing is for sure: the incoming Saturn Pluto conjunction (CLICK HERE for details) is going to do wonders for breaking up some people’s routines. For many this will be an incredibly liberating experience, leading to a better life. for others, at least of the time, this will seem to be a painful and upsetting experience. Because, as it turns out, we may want our routines much more than we realize.

When I was a kid I had a pet hamster. And, like caged rodents everywhere, he ran in his wheel a lot. In fact he ran so much that he would often stop and sit in his wheel and pant like a dog until he could get up and go again.

I often wondered whether or not he was doing this out of desperation for some sort of novelty, like a prisoner in solitary confinement pacing all day. I did my best to supplement his experience… even if that meant sometimes having him escape behind the couch when I let him out. Fortunately I always managed to find him before the vacuum cleaner did.

As it turns out though, hamsters actually like running incessantly in a wheel.

In 2014 two neurophysiologists in the Netherlands, Johanna H. Meijer and Yuri Robbers, published the results of an unusual study that frankly, I’m surprised no one thought to do before. They were well aware of how much time laboratories mice spend running in their wheels, and like myself as a child, they wondered if this wasn’t just the symptom of a barren and uninteresting life.

They set up two hamster wheels, one in an urban park and one in a natural area inaccessible to humans and left behind motion-detecting cameras to see what would happen.

it turns out that mice who live in the wild, who by definition are living their best possible and most natural life, love running in wheels. And not just mice either: rats, shrews, frogs, and even snails all enjoy voluntarily running in a wheel… something that (to an outside observer) seems pretty much entirely pointless.

So: brace yourself for the Saturn Pluto conjunction. In many cases, it will lead to a new and better life. The things that get stripped away can and will be replaced with better and happier and more functional things.

At the same time, you might find that once it’s gone, you might miss running in that same old wheel more than you realized.
