When we choose Conscious Parenting there is no shortage of teachable moments. Almost every situation offers us a moment to share insight, to point out something unique about ourselves or the world and to help our child become critical thinkers about not only their lives, but the world we live in. The question at hand […]

Joy Card #28 in The Conscious Living Wisdom Cards (Special Moms’ Edition)
Today I drew the Joy Card.
I spent the morning on a field trip with Caidin’s class. They are studying the Hudson River this year, so we went to the bank of the river to explore and observe. Sometimes field trips can be chaotic, but this one was one of the more enjoyable ones I’ve been on. The kids were great. They sat and drew a picture of the river for the cover of their journals and when they were finished they one by one migrated to the river’s edge and started skipping stones. There was an easiness that the entire group possessed that was just so nice to be a part of it. When it was time to leave, they packed up just as easily as they had unpacked and walked backed to the school van, full of joy.
The group as a whole joyfully embraced this field trip and it was a great reminder of how joy is inherent and when embraced there is an easiness to life that most of us have forgotten.
Here is the text for the Joy Card.
Throughout our lives, expression of our joy is often stifled or altogether stopped. We become programmed to shorten or deaden it for fear that others won’t be able to accept us as joyful. It is true that many people cannot accept being around joy, because it reminds them that they cannot and do not experience it themselves, but is that reason to stop yours from flowing? Possibly you have not even been aware of when and where you cut your own joy short. Joy flows up from inside of us from a place just below the base of the spine (just below the tailbone). To get your joy flowing, close your eyes and place your attention at the base of your spine. Imagine that you are turning on a faucet opening the stream of free-flowing joy. Imagine that the flow of joy is a color and by using your intention, move the energy of joy up your spine and allow it to fountain out the top of your head. Practice this short meditation daily to help you live life joyously.
For Your Child
Children live and breathe joy, if we let them. Their inner light is a natural expression of joy, but too often we unintentionally squash that light. Fostering joy in our children can be difficult when we are pulled in many directions and have many responsibilities and sometimes many concerns. This card is asking you to fan the flame of joy that burns within your child. A life lived joyously will flow with grace and ease. Encourage your child to sing, dance, laugh, play and love. If you discover that you have cut off the joy by mistake, use your realization as a teaching moment and talk with your child about the ways in which our focus can cloud how we live and dampen our joy. And then tickle until joy returns!
