What if the very earth beneath our feet could heal us?

That is the premise behind crystal healing, an alternative medical technique in which certain crystals and other stones are used to heal the human body of a variety of ailments.

Proponents of crystal healing report that these crystals act as conduits for positive, healing energy, which flows into the body, causing disease-causing negative energy to likewise flow out. Each type of healing stone has its own, unique properties. For example, Amethyst is believed to benefit the intestines, and yellow topaz grants mental clarity.

In recent years, an upsurge in popularity has taken crystal healing methods to the forefront of the spiritual branch of the alternative medicine world. Although no scientific studies have shown that gems or crystals have documented healing properties, may who have turned to alternative medicine have reported positive results.

Whatever you believe, there’s certainly no harm in trying out the power of healing stones in conjunction with your regular visits to the doctor’s office—after all, there may be factors at play that we do not yet fully understand. To help you begin your multi-colored adventure, let’s take a look at 9 powerful healing stones, and what they can do for you.

Garnet

The word garnet comes from the Middle English word, gernet, which means “dark red,” an apt description of this gemstone. This stone is also found in a variety of other colors, such as orange, yellow, green, blue, and pink, but shades of red are the most common.

When it comes to healing, garnet is a stone of regeneration and health.

Crystal healing specialists generally agree that garnet promotes rapid general healing and regeneration in users. Garnet also has a positive effect on disorders such as acid reflux, blood-related illnesses, and physical strength.

Once you’ve found and are ready to use your garnet—or any of the stones on this list—you’ll need to begin by clearing away the energy of the many hands that have touched it before yours. Run your new stone under clear water and place it in sun or moonlight for a few hours.

After doing so, you can begin to use your garnet through meditation and proximity. Try sitting quietly while holding your stone. Breathe. Pray, according to your faith, or simply state what you would like to happen.

Work with your crystal each day, and keep it near you—in a pocket, purse, or even under your pillow.

Use your intuition to find out what works best for you, and find out if garnet might just be a part of the remedy for what ails you.

Rose Quartz

Rose quartz is a type of quartz that has a pale pink to red hue due to trace amounts of titanium, manganese, or iron.

It is also considered, by practitioners of alternative medicine, to be the stone of love—in this case, love of the self, in the form of self-esteem and self-worth. Rose quartz is simply brimming with happiness, and is a very positive stone that can help bring out forgiveness, compassion, and tolerance in users.

One of the most important qualities we can have is the ability to care for and love ourselves. It is the foundation of all else we do—if we do not believe we have inherent value as human beings, we have trouble caring for ourselves or others properly.

So give rose quartz a try—keep it with you and try something new and out of your comfort zone. Head out for a night of dancing or give a speech. Ask that special someone out. Take a risk, and know that whatever the outcome is, you are still incredibly valuable. Rose quartz may just help you maintain that realization.

As with all stones, don’t hesitate to make use of traditional medicine, such as counseling, good nutrition, and regular exercise. A well-balanced approach to healing is the best approach.

Fluorite

Fluorite is the mineral form of calcium fluoride, and while it is naturally colorless, impurities lend it many different colors, often in the form of bands.

This is the stone of mental order and clarity, and can be used to help alleviate instability, paving the way for a more balanced view of life. Feeling tossed about on a sea of restless emotions? Try carrying fluorite with you throughout the day—it helps cleanse and detoxify the centers of emotion.

Fluorite is also the stone of learning, and can improve concentration and focus, while simultaneously reducing the anxiety that can sometimes make retaining information difficult. If you’re a student, learning a new instrument, or facing a complex new job, fluorite may be the stone you’ll want to keep on your person.

And if you’ve ever experienced problems with “mental fog,” that just won’t seem to go away with other forms of treatment, give fluorite a try. You might just find yourself thinking clearly and calmly.

Physically, lapis lazuli is beneficial to the throat, vocal cords, and larynx, and can help to regulate endocrine and thyroid issues.

This is one of the most effective stones to meditate with, as lapis lazuli is the stone of higher awareness, able to bring information to the mind in images rather than words. This is an especially great boon to those who have creative jobs, as their next big inspiration can come from this.

So if you’re feeling intellectually or creatively drained, or are suffering from one of the aforementioned health issues, give lapis lazuli a try. You just might have a breakthrough.

Hematite is the main ore of iron, and is generally black to steel-gray, and is sometimes red to reddish brown.

If you suffer from anxiety, this stone is for you. A heavy, calming stone, hematite is very grounding—it leaves the user feeling comfortable and “in the moment,” rather than being lost in memory or worry.

This disconnection from the present—which many of us suffer from—is the cause of much discomfort. But by practicing mindfulness through meditation with hematite, you can reconnect with what’s currently going on in your life.

This is wonderful for your loved ones, as well, as you’ll find yourself better able to interact with others. If people describe you as being “absent,” or often remark that you have your “head in the clouds,” you may just need a little meditation with this shiny, black stone.

Think of hematite as protection. When you’re worried, bring it out and handle it. Pay attention to its smoothness, its weight. This will help you reconnect with the present rather than worrying about the past or future.
