We love scandals about the private lives and all the lascivious details. The more controversial, the better we will feast. Although this sounds morbid, it is true. This explains the success of TMZ and other tabloids which we're always zealous to sink our teeth into. America has had its share of drama over the years involving politicians, sports stars and other figure heads. The transgressions are contemptible and never forgotten. From Monica Lewinsky to Martha Stewart, the nosedive into the moral abyss is intriguing. "Scandal is a false narrative, a smoke screen that camouflages rather than reveals. When we don't know what we're seeing, we overreact," author Jerry Saltz explained. Breaking ethical and moral codes are hard to dispute regardless of how camouflaged they are. Whether it was crossing into illegal activities or committing adultery, here are 6 of the biggest scandals in America.

Johnny Depp

Actor Johhny Depp was making news for the struggles he endured at the box office over the years. Yet, it was his personal life that really made the prominent headlines in 2016 when he was accused of domestic violence. Amber Heard filed for divorce and was given a temporary restraining order against Depp. She claimed that she was psychologically abused and was physically abused by Depp. People released photos of a bruised Heard, which further incriminated the actor. According to Variety, the couple reached a settlement in the divorce. Heard was given $7 million and she donated the entirety of the settlement to the "American Civil Liberties Union and the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Heard ialso appeared in an emotional domestic violence PSA." Depp's career is making headlines more for his work and for the reprised role as Captain Jack Sparrow in “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" and is moving forward with his career.

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods is renowned as one of the greatest golfers of all time and perhaps experienced the biggest fall from grace that we've seen in years. Woods had a car accident from driving under the influence in 2009. Shortly after, news surfaced of him cheating on his wife with numerous mistresses. His performance on the course started to tank and the spiral continued. Woods has been arrested again on drink-driving charges since then. The golfer apologized to family, friends and fans on the events. "I will do everything in my power to ensure this never happens again." Woods has won 14 major tournaments and was required to pull out of the Dubai Desert Classic because of his mediocre performance. He remains to be a punch line to many because of his past indiscretions.

Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton was accused by Gennifer Flowers in 1992 of having an affair and he was brought up on harassment charges by Paula Jones around the same time. Although these were sizable headlines, it was his affair with intern Monica Lewinsky that launched an investigation and began the impeachment process. The Senate voted to acquit Clinton of perjury and obstruction of justice. “If you live long enough, you'll make mistakes. But if you learn from them, you'll be a better person. It's how you handle adversity, not how it affects you. The main thing is never quit, never quit, never quit," he said. Clinton went on to serve two presidency terms, left the office with the highest end-of-office approval rating of any U.S. president since World War II.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Arnold Schwarzenegger an Austrian-born actor, bodybuilder and the 38th governor of California created a stir after his affair. Journalist, activist and best-selling author Maria Shriver and Schwarzenegger were married for 25 years when the couple split after the news surfaced. Schwarzenegger was also secretly fathering a child with the family housekeeper. He told the Men's Journal he's focused on having a great relationship with Joseph Baena, who was born to Schwarzenegger's ex-mistress. "You can't go back - if I could, in reality, be Terminator, of course, I would go back in time and would say, 'Arnold, no.'" He also added: "It's always easy to be smart in hindsight. That's not the way it works."

Martha Stewart

A federal jury found celebrity homemaker Martha Stewart guilty of all 4 counts related to obstructing a government investigation into her sale of ImClone stock in 2001. She was found guilty of felony charges of conspiracy and making false statements to investigators. She was then sentenced to serve a 5-month term at Alderson Federal Prison Camp in West Virginia. “Luckily, I have an extremely strong, healthy constitution, so my health never suffered,” she said. “Health, optimism and that curiosity to see what shouldn’t happen, what you can overcome. So, I overcame a very difficult, nasty situation.” Stewart also said that she was innocent.

O.J. Simpson

The O.J. Simpson murder case rocked the nation for weeks and was described as the most publicized criminal trial in history. The trial was televised for 135 days and watched by over 150 million people. The former National Football League player was tried on 2 counts of murder for the deaths of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman on June 12, 1994. The jury deliberated to reach the verdict of not guilty on both murder charges. Simpson's luck ran out in 2007 where he was arrested for stealing sports memorabilia at gunpoint. He was found guilty of 12 charges related to the incident, including armed robbery and kidnapping and sentenced to 33 years in prison. Today, Simpson still preserves his innocence in the murder of his wife and her friend.
