Blog: Minnie's Moment
It was a particularly rambunctious crowd at Minnie's Nails on Wednesday. Minnie's is located in an upscale strip center on the "right side" of the tracks. The clientele is exclusively, well-groomed women with money and time to spare. The staff at Minnie's is exclusive too. Minnie hires hip attractive young women with attitude, you won't find the stereotypical Asian-born manicurists at Minnie's Nails. The manicure stations are clustered in pods, perfect for conversation and gossip. Sal is a regular, everyone at Minnie's knows about her smart and beautiful young daughter Erin, who is pre-med and studying for the MCATS. "Erin is at the library up-town. She's STUDYING FOR THE MCATS (just in case we need a reminder about how SMART Erin is) and a Hispanic man walks by her table and drops off a note asking her if she wanted to meet for coffee sometime. Erin said he looked old, like he was in his THIRTIES!" Sal pointedly tells her manicurist and sweeps the room with a head gesture to include the others, "Erin is twenty-one, but she looks sixteen. It's frightening to think that in our town there's a pedophile in the library." Gasp, shock, and tsk-tsks all around. Sal reported the incident to the library director and the police. Luanne thought that there was so much wrong with the story she didn't know where to begin. But she had to start somewhere, so she asked Sal what Erin's reaction would be if the guy was a hot thirty-something Caucasian? Titter, titter, that would be another story . When will people learn to think broadly - not react, in a strange situation that makes them uncomfortable? There's so much good going on in God's world. It's important to look through eyes that welcome all new experiences. Don't live life being afraid, passing judgement, and trying to protect children who aren't children anymore. Be open to diversity, be grateful for the familiar, and be thankful to God for both.
