Also known as: The House of Communication, or The House of Siblings

What it rules in your life: The Third House has a lot to do with how you think and communicate. And here you thought that was all Mercury’s job! The Third House is the general ruler of your workaday brain activity: things like how you compose an email or plan a shopping trip or shout out the answers at the TV before the contestants do on a game show. It also rules things like taking short trips either in town or to nearby familiar locations, it also has a lot to do with your siblings, if any.

Naturally, you’d expect the Third House to have an association with learning, and you’d be right. But specifically it rules your elementary school education. College will just have to wait until we get to the Ninth House.

(No matter what transits are happening, how they play out in your life depends on your individual birth chart. Write me with your date, time, and place of birth — and I’ll send you a copy and a free sneak preview!)

What it rules in an organization or mundane chart: Advertising, press releases, and the e-mail system.

How the placement of the ruler affects it:

Ruler of the Third House in the First House tends to give you excellent communication skills, and you could benefit from writing or speaking. You probably are pretty talkative. Don’t be too surprised if (for better or worse) one or more of your siblings was a significant factor in you becoming who you are now.

When the ruler of the Third House is in the Second House, there’s a good chance that you could make money off of speaking, writing, or communicating in general. Having a bad day? Feeling down about things? Go for a walk. You’d be surprised how much that can help.

If the ruler of the Third House is in the Third House? The nature of that planet has a lot to say about the situation with your siblings. Talking things out may be a particularly effective way for you to sort out your problems. Watch out for being too gossip-y. Try keeping a journal.

When the ruler of the Third House is in the Fourth House, you might make for a good historical researcher, or may serve as the person who remembers the family history. Describing your situation to yourself may be an excellent way to find some grounding.

Ruler of the Third House in the Fifth House might make you a natural at “sweet-talking.” Try to find a creative outlet when things are stressing you out. You probably tell a pretty good story.

If the ruler of your Third House is in the Sixth House? You probably find that (even more than with most people) your state of mind has a direct bearing on your physical health, and vice versa. Want to do a better job at work? Try organizing that messy desk of yours firsts.

When the ruler of the Third House is in the Seventh House, you’re going to have a hard time dealing with a partner who can’t communicate, or (too be blunt) isn’t terribly bright. You’re probably good at talking things through with people, especially a spouse or romantic partner — and at figuring out what makes the other guy tick.

If the ruler of your Third House is in the Eighth House, you probably think about sex and/or the occult a fair bit. You aren’t afraid to examine what others would consider to be “dark” subjects. You might prove to have a talent for interrogating people.

When the ruler of the Third House is in the Ninth House, you naturally enjoy learning new things and learning about other cultures and/or periods in history. You enjoy exploring and/or questioning religious beliefs and ways of life that are different from yours.

If the ruler of the Third House is in the Tenth House, your communications skills and ability to learn new things will be of great benefit with your career. You may spend a lot of your time and energy figuring our your place in the world, and in your work environment.

When the ruler of the Third House is in the Eleventh House, you likely know how to get conversations started (and how to keep them going) at a party or other social situation. You don’t at all mind telling others about whatever personal or political cause you’re into (so maybe tone it down a little?).

Your Third House ruler in the Twelfth House may make you very good at figuring out how to help others who are less fortunate than yourself, or who are going through a time of need. Your mind may be a little too busy to make for consistently solid sleep.

Things the House rules you might not have expected: Vehicles in general, like cars or public transit. Teaching. Bartering.
