One of the great things about being an astrologer is that it gives me the opportunity to give a lot of people a sense of realistic, well grounded optimism. I generally like my clients, and in a larger sense I like humanity. But sometimes that inevitably leads me to a little cynicism.

(Wondering what the next few months hold in store for you? Write me with your date, time, and place of birth — and I’ll send you a free sneak preview!)

Case in point? The recent popularity of a concept referred to as The Great Reset. If you’re unfamiliar with that phrase, you probably won’t be for long if you’re on social media. It’s an initiative originating with the World Economic Forum in light of all the disruption caused by the Saturn Pluto conjunction/COVID-19. Without boring you to death with the details, here is a quote from the World Economic Forum that describes, roughly, what The Great Reset entails:

“The Covid-19 crisis, and the political, economic and social disruptions it has caused, is fundamentally changing the traditional context for decision-making. The inconsistencies, inadequacies and contradictions of multiple systems –from health and financial to energy and education – are more exposed than ever amidst a global context of concern for lives, livelihoods and the planet. Leaders find themselves at a historic crossroads, managing short-term pressures against medium- and long-term uncertainties.”

Sounds innocuous enough, doesn’t it? It sounds to me like a chance to get some good out of a very bad situation. It’s not an attempt to dramatically overturn any existing orders. It’s more like what George Bush Senior was calling for when he referred to a “kinder, gentler conservatism.”

But of course, people being who and what they are, there’s already a rush to taint the idea of discussing anything related to The Great Reset. In record time, people have started screaming on social media about how this is obviously some sort of a conspiracy to take over the world, microchip your children, put your cat in a concentration camp, or whatever.

Sound familiar? I’ve been following conspiracy theories my whole life. You know what they’re like? Imagine a restaurant that only serves one dish per day: a soup made out of leftover bits and pieces of previous days’ soups. And yet mysteriously, people keep going back and buying more of today’s soup.

So what’s all this got to do with astrology? On December 21st we will be experiencing what is called The Grand Conjunction: Jupiter conjunct Saturn in the first degree of Aquarius, which will be the first of a series of Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions over the next 300 years or so, all happening in Air Signs. Traditionally this conjunction is associated with major social changes, the end of political regimes in the beginning of new ones, and big stuff like that.

Frankly, I was looking forward to the potential optimism something like that could generate. Astrologically it’s been a crappy year and we all could have used something to look forward to. But noooooo, paranoia and disinformation won’t allow that, will they?

Much of the fear of The Great Reset seems to be because of the perception that the United Nations and the World Economic Forum are terrifying monoliths of power and control. Which, based on observation, is obvious nonsense.

Remember when you were a kid and you had that substitute teacher who couldn’t control the class who came in for a week when Mrs Hapablap had her gallbladder removed? You know, the guy with the constantly panicked looking his eyes? Imagine that guy, except without the ability to issue detention or send anyone to the Principal’s office.

That, in a nutshell is the United Nations and the World Economic Forum.

Astrologers, for some reason, are at least as prone to buying into this recycled nonsense as anyone else. This, despite the fact that astrologers observe recurring large patterns for a living, and should by now have realized that these patterns… recur.

In his Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy books, Douglas Adams wrote about God’s last message to his creation, which was carved in huge letters on the side of a mountain range. In his books, that message was:

WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE

I’m beginning to think that if there was an actual God’s final message to his creation on Earth, it would be carved in giant letters across the Himalayas:

THIS IS WHY YOU CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS

Anyway, I will remain optimistic, safe in the knowledge that the various predicted ends of the world have never actually happened. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going back to bed. I have to gently nurture what optimism I have left. My clients need some of that.
