Former Kansas City Chiefs star Derrick Johnson has started a new chapter of his life as he has published his first children’s book. Entitled Super DJ Saves Field Day, Johnson wrote the story about a dad who moonlights as a superhero in his community, with his wife, Brittni Johnson. But rather than just saving characters from their situations, Super DJ helps his community figure out ways to move their own obstacles.

Johnson says the story is to help kids learn for themselves, rather than be rescued. “Kids, believe it or not, are around each other more than they’re around adults, teachers and parents. A lot of times when adults are around, we pull them out of situation, or we jump in and we handle it for them,” he told Chron. “This is an opportunity to allow them to think before they act. This superhero just saying, ‘Hey, you’re going to go through this, you know, remember these things, be conscious of this and go handle your business.’… A lot of times, we want things to be perfect for kids, and that’s not how life is.”

Speaking to Fox News, Johnson, a Christian, said he believes the Devil tries to get in kids’ way. “The enemy is the devil. I’m a big believer in Jesus Christ, and the enemy is always at work, especially for kids that have potential. And if kids don’t have mentors around them, the enemy can manipulate them at times and make things seem more than what it is and make it seem like they don’t have a way out. And that’s when you get into kids really isolating themselves.” He said that Christ is the best way to fight the devil. “Being able to have that identity in Christ is everything. It allows them to stay grounded, not that life is going to be perfect if you got church … but at least you have the proper tools to make things happen,” he said. He also encouraged parents to push back against harmful influences, such as iPads and other digital devices.

Apart from the need for Christ, Johnson stressed the importance of education. “My mom being a teacher for over 40 years, I know what it means to serve the youth at a high level. … And, a lot of times, they just need more help and more resources so they can really push the mission. Public schools are at a standstill. … We have to put more attention on them, more resources, pumping more money into there and using it the right way, obviously. Not just a dollar amount but using it in a strategic way.”
