A preseason game between the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons was suspended after a player was seriously injured. Lions safety Morice Norris attempted to tackle Falcons running back Nathan Carter when he appeared to hit his head on Carter’s leg. Norris lay on the field for around 20 minutes while he was evaluated by medical staff and then was taken off the field in an ambulance to be evaluated. Players from both teams took a knee to show support for Norris while he lay on the field. The Falcons forfeited a snap when the game resumed and joined the Lions in the middle of the field to join hands and pray for Norris.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell addressed the moment at a press conference after the game. “Man, it’s a violent game, and we love it, but when something like this happens, the silver lining is the brotherhood. I mean, to see all those guys – from that team, our team – come together and everybody is thinking about another player, it just means a lot,” he said. The decision to suspend the game was decided between both Campbell and the Falcons’ head coach, Raheem Morris. “When something like that happens, it puts things in perspective. I’m just praying for Mo. I ask that everybody prays for him,” he said.
The Lions reported that Norris was in stable condition, was breathing, and having some movement. “He’s breathing, he’s talking. It’s good. He’s got some movement. Now they’re running more tests,” said Campbell. He was back at the Lions’s headquarters on Sunday an anonymous source told The Associated Press. Norris also posted to his social media to report that he was doing well. “I’m all good man don’t stress,” he wrote.
While professional sports are wrought competitiveness, it is also a place of profound camaraderie and compassion in times of serious injury. On January 2, 2023, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest on the field during a Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The moment led to an outpouring of support for the Bills, including from the Bengals. The NFL suspended the game and made the decision to not reschedule it. Hamlin was able to make a full recovery thanks to emergency services on the field.
