R&B singer Chris Brown is celebrating a new academic honor after receiving an honorary doctorate from a Dallas-based private Christian university, though the recognition is also drawing scrutiny online over the school’s accreditation status.
Brown, 37, shared photos on Instagram showing himself dressed in academic regalia while accepting an honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Visual & Performing Arts from Harvest Christian University. The singer captioned the post, “I DID A THING!”

According to the diploma, the degree was awarded in recognition of Brown’s “longstanding impact on music, entertainment, and performance culture.” The honor comes after nearly two decades of commercial success for the artist, who rose to fame in the mid-2000s with hit songs like Forever and Kiss Kiss.
Brown’s latest album, Brown, recently debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 chart, fueled by millions of streams during its opening week.
But shortly after Brown posted about the honor, critics began questioning the university’s legitimacy. Harvest Christian University has awarded hundreds of honorary degrees to celebrities over the years, including Busta Rhymes, T.I., Tank, Cedric the Entertainer, and former Dallas Cowboys player Michael Irvin.
The university defends the practice on its website, describing honorary degrees as a way to recognize individuals for significant contributions to culture, society, or a professional field, regardless of formal education.
“As proof of a life already lived with distinction,” the university states, honorary degrees are meant to celebrate achievement rather than academic coursework.
The school even points to Benjamin Franklin as an early example of a public figure who proudly used honorary academic titles despite lacking formal higher education.
Still, concerns remain about the school’s accreditation. Although Harvest Christian University says it operates under a “Royal Charter” and references several international accrediting bodies on its website, the institution is not accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
That means its degrees generally do not carry the same academic recognition or transferability as those from regionally accredited colleges and universities.
Brown’s honorary doctorate also reignited broader conversations online about the singer’s controversial past. In 2009, Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault after attacking his then-girlfriend Rihanna. He received probation, community labor, and domestic violence counseling as part of his sentence.
Since then, Brown has continued to face legal troubles and abuse allegations, including a 2025 arrest connected to an alleged assault that reportedly occurred in 2023.
Despite the criticism, many fans congratulated the singer online and celebrated the recognition of his musical accomplishments. Brown has not publicly responded to the backlash surrounding the school’s accreditation or the criticism tied to his past controversies.
