Actor Neal McDonough is opening up about one of the darkest seasons of his life, revealing that his refusal to compromise his marriage and personal convictions led to career fallout, financial ruin, and a battle with alcohol — before faith and family helped him rebuild.

In a recent interview, the 60-year-old actor reflected on being labeled a “religious nut bag” in Hollywood after refusing to kiss another woman on screen out of respect for his wife, Ruve McDonough.

“What time is the bar open? That was generally my thought process back then,” McDonough admitted. “It was, you know, fired from a show because I wouldn’t kiss a woman. No one would hire me because they thought I was this religious nut bag, which is that I love my wife so much. And no one can understand it.”

McDonough said the rejection from Hollywood took a devastating toll on him personally and financially. While he described himself as “always a drinker,” he admitted the situation pushed his drinking into dangerous territory.

“It became a bad problem,” he said, adding, “I lost the house, lost the cars, lost everything.”

The actor, known for roles in shows like Desperate Housewives and Band of Brothers, said he reached a point where he felt he had failed his family.

“I failed my family. I failed Ruve, my five kids,” he explained. “That crucifixion caused me so much inner pain because I made it all about me.”

During that difficult chapter, McDonough said the late actor Luke Perry stepped in to help by allowing him and his family to stay in Perry’s home after losing theirs.

But McDonough said true change came after a difficult but honest conversation with his wife. According to the actor, Ruve gave him a choice that changed everything.

“She grabbed me and says, ‘It’s us or the bottle, you choose,'” he recalled. “And I never looked back.”

McDonough said the experience forced him to stop living for himself and instead focus on serving God.

“It’s just a cold, hard fact that God gave me an amazing, incredible, most amazing woman that I’ve ever met,” he said. “She got through me hell, and now here I am, in a fantastic place in life.”

Today, the couple has been married for more than 25 years and works together as producing partners on projects including Homestead and The Last Rodeo. They also share five children.

McDonough is currently starring in Jimmy, a film honoring legendary actor Jimmy Stewart. McDonough said studying Stewart’s life deeply impacted him, especially learning about the actor’s personal struggles after returning from World War II.

“To know what Jimmy Stewart had gone through … and think, ‘What am I going to do now in life?'” McDonough said. “He was a very conflicted guy who just tried to get up every day and do the right thing.”

Looking back now, McDonough says he feels grateful for where life has led him after years of hardship.

“I am one lucky and blessed dude to be part of it,” he said.
