Morgan Cole Wallen is from a remote town in Tennessee called Sneedville, where he spent his formative years. Before he discovered his love for music, Morgan was an impressive athlete. In high school, he was a pitcher and a notable shortstop for Gibbs High School, where he received interest from several colleges. Unfortunately (or not), he tore his ulnar collateral ligament in his senior year.
That was the beginning of his focus on music.
As a child, Wallen had piano and violin lessons, inspired by an eclectic playlist from his parents. Classic Rock to Contemporary Christian, Country to Alternative Rock, and even some hip-hop. Morgan developed a diverse musical palette, which inspired him to take up guitar lessons in junior high school.
According to several reports on Wallen’s life, when he began listening to Keith Whitley, that’s all it took. Country was his thing, and there was no stopping that zeal to become a country artist. Then came 2014 and season 6 of NBC’s “The Voice.”
Morgan auditioned with Howie Day’s indie classic, “Collide.” Shakira and Usher turned for him, but he ended up with Adam Levine throughout the show. Although he was eliminated in the late rounds of the playoffs, he knew he had made the right decision to pursue music.
Three years later, after his debut single “The Way I Talk,” Wallen began compilation albums with Florida Georgia Line and Jason Aldean. Then came his signature song, “Whiskey Glasses.” He’s been a top attraction in country music ever since. Despite a racial slur that had him “canceled” for a couple of years, Morgan has made a comeback to the public eye, just in time to celebrate his 10-year anniversary in music in 2024.
Morgan Wallen’s Religious Beliefs
Morgan Wallen had a head start in his knowledge of Jesus Christ, as his Southern Baptist pastor in Sneedville, Tennessee, was his father. That instilling of God’s Word surrounds his music as well. Even casual fans can hear Morgan Wallen singing about Jesus.
Wallen has stated that he enjoys incorporating his faith into his music, even in subtle ways. He sees it as a way to share his beliefs and connect with fans on a deeper level. When talking about his song with crossover artist and GRAMMY winner Post Malone, “I Ain’t Comin’ Back,” there is a blatant Jesus reference.
"You know, me as a Christian, I think anytime that I can throw little hints of that in my music, I'm always all for it," he explains.
It struck people–fans and casuals alike–because of the strength of the lyric.
"There's a lot of reasons I ain't Jesus / But the main one is that I ain't comin' back / Oh no, no, I ain't comin' back," Wallen sings in the chorus.
"Ain't no need to wait three days / I might be a lot of things / But I ain't your saving' grace," is another line found in the second verse that speaks to the resurrection of Christ.
"'I Ain't Comin' Back' with Post on it. This was written during the time when Post was working on his album. I've always loved this song, and I told him, 'Hey, if you don't put this on your album, then I'm gonna put it on mine,'" Wallen said.
