Victor Willis was an American singer, songwriter, actor, and founding member of the disco group Village People. Best known as the band’s original lead singer, Willis co-wrote many of its biggest hits, including “Y.M.C.A.,” “Macho Man,” “In the Navy,” and “Go West.”

Willis was born in Dallas, Texas, and raised primarily in San Francisco, California. He grew up in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, where his father served as a Baptist minister.
