Like the theme song says, Will Smith was born and raised in Philadelphia. The second oldest of four children, he began rapping at age 12, and at age 16, met a DJ named Jeff at a party. Their friendship led to the commercially successful rapping duo known as DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. Will Smith was nicknamed “Prince” by his schoolmates because his charming personality and quickness on his feet helped get him out of trouble.
In addition to his music career, Will Smith successfully crossed over into TV and movies. He starred in the TV sit-com The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, for 6 seasons, followed by mega-stardom with roles in Independence Day, the Men in Black franchise, Enemy of the State, Hitch, Hancock, and many others, and currently commands $20 million per film.
