Tilda Swinton is the daughter of Judith Balfour and Sir John Swinton. She has three brothers, and their family can trace their lineage back to the Middle Ages. They are one of only three families that can trace unbroken land ownership and lineage to before the Norman Conquest.

Swinton attended several independent schools when she was younger and spent time in Kenya with Project Trust during a gap year. She has a degree in Social and Political Sciences and begun acting while she was in college. She joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1984 and entered the realm of film in 1986. Since then, she has appeared in a wide variety of films from performance art pieces such as “Volcano Saga” to mainstream blockbusters such as Marvel’s “Doctor Strange."
