Shedeur Sanders is an American Football player currently (as of 2026) under contract with the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League. Sanders was drafted in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft after playing college football at Jackson State and the University of Colorado.

Shedeur is one of five children of Deion Sanders, a Hall of Fame cornerback who played for the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers, and Dallas Cowboys of the NFL. Deion also played professional baseball for the Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, and New York Yankees. Deion Sanders served as the offensive coordinator at Trinity Christian High School in Texas during the time his sons, Shilo and Shedeur, played there. Shedeur originally committed to play collegiately at Florida Atlantic, but instead attended Jackson State after his father was named head coach there.

Shedeur played for two seasons at Jackson State, winning numerous awards. He was named the outstanding freshman for the Southwest Athletic Conference (SWAC), as well as second-team all-conference. He also won the Jerry Rice Award for the outstanding freshman in the FCS subdivision of NCAA Division I. Shedeur was the first player from a historically black college or university (HBCU) to win the award. He was also the first college player to sign a name, image and likeness (NIL) agreement with Nike.

After his sophomore season at Jackson State, Sanders transferred to the University of Colorado when his father became head coach there. In his second season at Colorado, he helped lead the team to a 9-4 record and an appearance in the Alamo Bowl. He led the NCAA in completion percentage while passing for over 4,100 yards. He was named the Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Year, and also won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

Prior to the 2025 NFL Draft, many analysts expected Sanders to be drafted in the first round. However, he was not drafted until the fifth round, one of the biggest draft slides in recent memory. Some speculated that Sanders brought extra "baggage" due to his famous father and the significant media coverage surrounding their family. While it was suggested that Shedeur acted "entitled" and "difficult" during the pre-draft interview process, most people complimented his maturity in responding to his draft slide. Following the draft, he signed a four-year contract with Cleveland.

Cleveland had also drafted another quarterback, Dillon Gabriel, in the third round of that same draft. Additionally, Cleveland had two veteran quarterbacks – Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett – on the team heading into training camp. As a result, Shedeur did not get much playing time during the preseason and did not play in any games until late in the 2025 season. Prior to the start of the season, Cleveland traded Pickett to the Las Vegas Raiders; during the season, they traded Flacco to Cincinnati. Following those trades, Gabriel was named the starter. However, when he was injured, Sanders got his opportunity. He came into the game against Baltimore when Gabriel suffered a concussion, and then started for the first time against the Raiders in week 12 – a game Cleveland won. He finished the season with a 3-4 record as a starter and was named as a replacement for the Pro Bowl when other quarterbacks dropped out with injuries. However, Sanders also finished the season with the lowest passer rating for any quarterback who attempted at least 200 passes.

Is Shedeur Sanders Religious?

Shedeur Sanders is open in expressing his Christian faith. For example, during the NFL Draft, Shedeur and his family posted various messages expressing their faith and trust in God despite the circumstances.

For example, Shedeur posted "Thank You God for everything" during the third round of the draft, when he still had not been chosen. He also said in an interview, "I feel like with God, anything's possible – everything's possible." And his father posted: "My Bible says God uses the foolish things to confound the wise & he chose the weak things of the world that he might shame the strong! Please know God ain't done & God is just really getting started. Enjoy this lesson & stop stressing."

Throughout his first NFL season, Shedeur continued to express his faith and trust in God, no matter what happened around him. Most importantly, Shedeur has stressed that faith is not about winning or losing, but about giving God glory no matter what.

"Honoring God doesn't promise victory – but no matter the result, God is always deserving of praise," he has said.
