Isis Gaston, known professionally as Ice Spice, is a rapper. Born and raised in the Bronx in New York City, she started her music career in 2021 after meeting record producer RiotUSA while studying at college. Ice Spice first gained recognition in late 2022 with her song “Munch (Feelin’ U),” which achieved viral popularity on TikTok. She followed it with “Bikini Bottom” and “In Ha Mood,” leading up to her debut EP, “Like…?”

Her first entry on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with the Lil Tjay collaboration “Gangsta Boo.” She rose to prominence with collaborations “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2” with PinkPantheress, “Princess Diana” with Nicki Minaj, “Karma” with Taylor Swift, and “Barbie World” with Aqua and Nicki Minaj, all of which reached the top 10 of the Hot 100, making Ice Spice the first artist to garner four Hot 100 top-10 singles in 2023.

Music journalists have noted Ice Spice’s relaxed rapping style. In 2023, TIME described her as a “breakout star.” Publications like The New York Times and Billboard have dubbed her “rap’s new princess.” She’s been honored with the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist and the Impact Award from the BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards. Ice Spice was born in 2000 in the Bronx, New York City, where she was raised in the Fordham Road neighborhood. She’s the oldest of five siblings. Due to her parents’ busy work schedule, she spent much of her childhood with her cousins and grandparents.

She went to school in the Bronx until she was sent to Sacred Heart High School, a Catholic high school in Yonkers. When she was seven, Ice Spice took a liking to hip-hop after listening to artists like Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim. She wrote freestyle raps and poetry from elementary school to high school. In a Billboard interview, she explained that she grew up listening to 50 Cent, Jay-Z, and Wu-Tang Clan because of her father’s rap background. She would write out lyrics in the Notes app on her phone, listening to hip-hop instrumentals and rapping out loud to them.

She explained, “When I saw Nicki Minaj, I was so memorized. She’s the first female rapper that I had seen. And ever since then, I was kind of set on what I wanted to be.” She chose Ice Spice as her stage name while she was a freshman in high school.

What religion is Ice Spice?

Ice Spice identifies as religious but doesn’t specifically claim any religion. In an interview about her time in Catholic school, the rapper said, “I was very popular.” She also noted that when she started to go to Catholic school, “things started changing.” She added, “I didn’t go to church a lot at home growing up. I was never even baptized. But I’m still religious in the sense [that] I strictly pray every day, all the time.”
