Aryna Sabalenka is a Belarusian professional tennis player and one of the leading players of her generation. Known for her powerful serve, aggressive groundstrokes and emotional intensity on court, she has reached World No. 1 in both singles and doubles and won multiple Grand Slam singles championships.

Sabalenka was born on May 5, 1998, in Minsk, Belarus. Her father, Sergey Sabalenka, was a former ice hockey player who introduced her to tennis almost by accident. When Sabalenka was six, her father was driving past tennis courts and decided to stop and let her try the sport. She quickly became interested and eventually began training at Belarus' National Tennis Academy.

She later studied in a sports-related program at Belarusian State University. Growing up, Sabalenka admired Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, two players whose powerful styles were similar to the aggressive game she would eventually develop.

Sabalenka began playing professionally in 2015 and initially competed primarily on the ITF Women's Circuit. Her international breakthrough came in 2017 when she helped Belarus reach its first Fed Cup final. She climbed rapidly through the rankings the following year, winning WTA titles in New Haven and Wuhan and finishing 2018 just outside the world's top 10.

She also developed into an elite doubles player alongside Belgium's Elise Mertens. The pair won the 2019 US Open doubles championship and the 2021 Australian Open, helping Sabalenka reach World No. 1 in doubles. As her singles career grew, she gradually moved away from doubles to concentrate on individual competition.

Sabalenka's biggest singles breakthrough came at the 2023 Australian Open, where she defeated Elena Rybakina in the final to claim her first Grand Slam singles championship. She successfully defended the title in 2024 and later won back-to-back US Open championships in 2024 and 2025. She first reached World No. 1 in singles in September 2023 and has remained one of the WTA Tour's most consistent top-ranked players.

Her personal life has included significant loss. Her father died unexpectedly in 2019 at age 43. Sabalenka has frequently spoken about his influence on her career and her desire to fulfill the dreams they shared for her tennis future. In 2024, her former partner, retired Belarusian hockey player Konstantin Koltsov, died at age 42. Sabalenka later began a relationship with Brazilian businessman Georgios Frangulis, and the couple announced their engagement in 2026.

Away from tennis, Sabalenka has a tiger tattoo on her left arm, which helped inspire her nickname, "The Tiger." She has said she enjoys spending time with family and friends and reading when she is away from competition.

Aryna Sabalenka's Religious Beliefs

Sabalenka appears to have a Christian background associated with Eastern Orthodox traditions, although she has not publicly identified with a specific denomination. Reports about her religious background have described her as an Orthodox Christian, consistent with the predominant Christian tradition in her native Belarus.

Her public comments provide stronger evidence that faith has played a personal role in her life. Speaking about losing her father, Sabalenka has said she would sometimes visit church and light candles in memory of him and her grandfather. She has also spoken about believing that events in life happen for a reason and has increasingly referenced faith while discussing how she handles hardship.

Christian publications have also noted visible expressions of faith during her tennis career. Sabalenka has been seen making the sign of the cross during matches, a practice commonly associated with Orthodox and Catholic Christianity.

Following the death of her father, Sabalenka has indicated that her faith grew as she dealt with grief and the pressures of professional tennis. While she has not offered an extensive public explanation of her theology or church affiliation, her comments and practices suggest that Christian belief remains part of her personal life.
