Phil Robertson was best known as the patriarch of the Duck Commander family and a star of the hit reality TV series Duck Dynasty.

Born on April 24, 1946, in Vivian, Louisiana, Phil Alexander Robertson grew up as the fifth of seven children in a modest family. Raised in the rural South, his childhood was marked by poverty but also by values of hard work, resilience, and resourcefulness. Hunting, fishing, and living off the land were integral parts of his upbringing, shaping his deep connection to nature and self-reliance.

Despite the challenges of his early life, Phil excelled in sports, particularly football. He attended Louisiana Tech University on a football scholarship, where he played as the starting quarterback ahead of future NFL legend Terry Bradshaw. However, despite his athletic potential, Phil chose a different path. He walked away from football to pursue a simpler life rooted in nature, faith, and family.

In 1966, Phil married his high school sweetheart, Marsha “Kay” Carroway, known affectionately as Miss Kay. Their marriage, though tested by hardship, endured through love and faith. Together, they raised four sons: Alan, Jase, Willie, and Jep.

The early years of their marriage were marked by personal turmoil. Phil battled alcohol addiction and lived a lifestyle that nearly tore his family apart. But in the late 1970s, he surrendered his life to Christ. That decision marked a dramatic turning point—not only in his life but in the legacy of the entire Robertson family. His transformation through faith became central to his identity and message for the rest of his life.

Phil’s entrepreneurial spirit led to the creation of the Duck Commander duck call in 1972. Born out of his love for hunting and innovation, the product turned into a multimillion-dollar family business. This success paved the way for Duck Dynasty, which premiered in 2012 on A&E. The show followed the Robertson family’s life, blending humor, outdoorsmanship, and faith, and quickly became a cultural phenomenon.

Phil’s unfiltered personality and unwavering Christian values made him a standout figure on the show. While his outspokenness occasionally sparked controversy, many admired his authenticity and commitment to biblical truth.

In December 2024, the Robertson family revealed that Phil had been diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. Over the months that followed, his condition worsened. On May 25, 2025, Phil Robertson passed away at the age of 79, surrounded by his loved ones.

Announcing his passing, his family said, “We celebrate today that our father, husband, and grandfather, Phil Robertson, is now with the Lord. He reminded us often of the words of Paul, ‘You do not grieve like those who have no hope…’” They added, “We are grateful for his life on earth and will continue the legacy of love for God and love for others until we see him again.”
