Justin Rose is a professional golfer from England who plays on both the American and European golf tours. He was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, to English parents. His family moved to England when Justin was 5. His first brush with fame came at the 1998 Open Championship (British Open), where he finished fourth despite being a 17-year-old amateur.
He turned professional the day after that tournament, but then struggled for quite some time. He missed his first 21 cuts as a professional, but by 2001, he had begun to establish himself on the European Tour. His first professional win came at the Dunhill Championship in South Africa in 2002. By the 2004 season, his world ranking and earnings qualified him to play on the American tour, where he has generally played ever since.
Rose won his first U.S. tournament in 2010 – the Memorial Championship, hosted by Jack Nicklaus. In 2013, he won his first (and thus far only) major championship, the U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club outside Philadelphia. He trailed Phil Mickelson by two shots entering the final round, but managed to overtake Mickelson and win the championship by two shots.
Including his U.S. Open championship, Rose has twenty-six professional victories around the world. He also won the gold medal in men's golf at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He has finished in the top ten of the major championships (Masters, U.S. Open, Open Championship, U.S. PGA Championship) 23 times, and in 2018 reached number one in the World Golf Rankings.
Justin married his long-time girlfriend, Kate Phillips, in December 2006. The couple has two children, a son born in 2009 and a daughter born in 2012. They have a house in the Bahamas and a flat in the suburbs of London.
Justin has long been recognized as a gentleman and sportsman. He received the PGA Tour's Payne Stewart Award in 2021. This award is given to a player "whose values align with the character, charity, and sportsmanship that Stewart showed." These values include "respect for the traditions of the game, commitment to uphold the game's heritage of charitable support and professional and meticulous presentation of himself and the sport through his dress and conduct."
Justin was also named the winner of the Nicklaus-Jacklin Award at the 2023 Ryder Cup. This award is named for Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin, in honor of Nicklaus' concession of the final putt of the 1969 Ryder Cup to Jacklin. This award was introduced in 2021 and recognizes players in the Ryder Cup whose decisions and conduct elevate their teams. He was also named as a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2017 for his services to the game of golf.
Is Justin Rose Religious?
Justin has not made any public statements or acknowledged any religious faith. However, he and his wife have been active in several philanthropic efforts. They established the Kate and Justin Rose Foundation and have greatly assisted Blessings in a Backpack, an organization that provides "hunger-free weekends" for school children who might otherwise go hungry outside of school.
Their involvement has increased Blessings in a Backpack's ability to serve children in central Florida, including the establishment of a new Orlando chapter of the national organization. Kate has also served on the board of the national organization, assisting their efforts around the United States.
In March 2025, the couple was honored with Golf Digest's "Arnie Award" for their work with Blessings in a Backpack. This award, named in honor of Arnold Palmer, recognizes professional golfers "who reflect [Palmer's] commitment to philanthropy and community service." The award celebrates those who "make a significant impact through charitable work, carrying on Palmer's legacy on and off the course."
