Drew Rasmussen is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays of the American League. He was born in Puyallup, Wash., and played high school baseball in Washington before attending Oregon State University. After high school, Drew was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks, but he enrolled in college rather than signing a professional contract. Following his junior season at Oregon State in 2017, the Rays drafted him 31st overall, but he did not sign after failing his physical. He then underwent his second Tommy John surgery and missed his senior season. He began his major league career with the Milwaukee Brewers; the Rays and the Brewers are facing off in the 2026 World Series.
In spite of not playing as a senior, Drew was drafted by Milwaukee in the sixth round of the 2018 draft. He played in the minor leagues for most of his first two seasons in the Brewers organization, then made his major league debut on Aug. 19, 2020. He was on the Brewers’ major league roster early in the 2021 season, then was traded to the Rays on May 21, 2021, in the deal that brought Willy Adames to Milwaukee.
Drew missed much of the 2023 season due to his third major elbow surgery. His recovery continued during the first part of the 2024 season before he was activated in August. He appeared in 16 games for the Rays during the final part of that season, starting four and striking out 35 batters in 28.2 innings.
Drew signed a two-year contract with the Rays prior to the 2025 season. He validated the Rays’ confidence in him by being named an All-Star. He finished the season with a 10-5 record, striking out 127 batters and limiting opposing batters to a batting average of .214. In 2026, he was the team’s Opening Day starter, was named American League Pitcher of the Month for June after posting a 0.82 ERA over five starts, and earned a second straight All-Star selection. He finished the regular season 16-5 with a 2.67 ERA and 174 strikeouts in 172 innings. In the American League Division Series, Drew pitched eight scoreless innings and allowed one hit against the Yankees in a game Tampa Bay won 1-0. He also pitched well against Cleveland in the ALCS, including a win in Game 5, which the Rays won 3-1.
Off the field, Drew and his wife, Stevie, met at Oregon State in 2014 and married in 2020. They have a son.
Drew Rasmussen’s Religious Beliefs
Drew Rasmussen is a Christian and has spoken publicly about his faith. He grew up attending church and youth group, but he has said he did not consider himself a “man of faith” when he arrived at Oregon State. While rehabbing from his first Tommy John surgery, he began exploring Scripture more closely. He has also said, “I do think God does a lot of His best work in your life when things are going poorly.”
After the Brewers traded him to Tampa Bay in 2021, he said that what can seem hard in the moment can turn out to be better. He and Stevie have said that recovering from his later surgeries helped them grow in their faith.
