- Fun Fact: His second given name, "Ronaldo", was chosen after then-U.S. president Ronald Reagan, who was his father's favorite actor.
Ronaldo grew up in Madeira, the youngest of 4 children in a poverty-stricken family. He began playing for a local team, and by age 14, he was playing semi-professionally and his mother agreed to let him cease his formal education. At the time of his international debut, with Portugal, he was 18 years old.
Forbes Magazine has twice listed Ronaldo as the highest-paid footballer, based on his combined income from salary and off-field earnings.
When Ronaldo was 20, his father died of alcohol-related liver issues, and Ronaldo has repeatedly stated that he does not drink alcohol. He also states that he doesn't have (or plan to get) tattoos because he is an avid blood donor, and tattoos would prohibit a donation for a year.
