Tommy Paul is an American professional tennis player who has established himself as one of the leading US men of his generation. Known for his speed, athleticism and all-court game, Paul has reached the top 10 of the ATP rankings, advanced deep into Grand Slam tournaments and represented the United States at multiple Olympic Games.

Paul was born on May 17, 1997, in Voorhees Township, New Jersey. His parents are Kevin Paul and Jill MacMillan, and he has a brother, Dylan, and a sister, Jessie Lynn. His family moved from New Jersey to North Carolina when he was only three months old, and he grew up in Greenville, where he learned to play primarily on clay courts. His mother served as his first tennis coach.

Paul began playing tennis at age seven after his parents introduced him to the sport. Growing up, he admired American tennis star Andy Roddick. Paul attended J.H. Rose High School in Greenville but completed much of his schooling online while pursuing a tennis career. As a teenager, he moved to Boca Raton, Florida, to focus more seriously on his development.

Paul became one of the world's best junior players. In 2015, he won the French Open boys' singles championship by defeating fellow American Taylor Fritz in the final. He also reached the boys' singles final at the US Open that year, losing to Fritz. Paul had committed to play college tennis at the University of Georgia, but his French Open victory helped convince him to turn professional instead. 

His transition to the professional tour was gradual and included several injuries. Paul missed five months in 2018 because of a right elbow injury and another three months in 2019 with a left quadriceps and knee injury. He eventually broke into the ATP's top 100 and captured his first tour-level singles title at the Stockholm Open in 2021.

Paul's biggest Grand Slam breakthrough came at the 2023 Australian Open, where he advanced to the semifinals. The run made him the first American man to reach the Australian Open semifinals since Andy Roddick in 2009. He continued climbing the rankings and added more ATP titles, including championships at Dallas, Queen's Club and Stockholm in 2024.

Paul also represented the United States at the Tokyo Olympics and the 2024 Paris Olympics. In Paris, he partnered with Taylor Fritz to win the bronze medal in men's doubles. In June 2025, Paul reached a career-high singles ranking of World No. 8 after becoming the first American man since Andre Agassi in 2003 to reach the quarterfinals of both the Australian Open and French Open in the same season.

Away from tennis, Paul enjoys surfing, fishing, golf, basketball and dirt biking. His mother and stepfather have lived on a farm in South Jersey with chickens, sheep, dogs, a horse and a cat, and Paul has spoken about enjoying farm life when his schedule allows. He has been in a relationship with influencer and entrepreneur Paige Lorenze since 2022. In 2026, the couple launched Kids Outdoors, a nonprofit that helps children gain greater access to sports and outdoor activities.
