Katy Perry is an American singer, songwriter, and television personality.

She was born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson on Oct. 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California. She was raised in a strict Christian household by her parents, Keith and Mary Hudson, both of whom are Pentecostal pastors. Perry grew up alongside her siblings, Angela and David, in an environment heavily shaped by church life, ministry, and evangelical teachings.

During her childhood, Perry was exposed almost exclusively to Christian culture. She has said that her family listened only to Christian music, and she spent much of her early life singing in church and attending religious schools and camps. Secular music and popular culture were largely restricted in her home, which later influenced both her artistic identity and her eventual spiritual exploration.

Perry discovered a passion for music at a young age and began taking vocal lessons as a child. Inspired by Christian artists and gospel music, she pursued a career as a singer during her teenage years.
