Christian Pulisic is probably the most famous American soccer player at present. He was born in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and largely grew up there before beginning his professional soccer career in Germany. He joined the senior squad at Dortmund at the age of 17; he became the youngest player to ever score multiple goals in a Bundesliga season, a record later shattered in the 20/21 season by Youssoufa Moukoko. He was the runner-up for the 2018 Kopa Trophy, awarded to the world's best soccer player under 21.
At the beginning of 2019, Christian signed with Premier League club Chelsea on a transfer fee of $73 million, setting the record for the highest fee paid for an American player. He spent four seasons at Chelsea and helped the club win the UEFA Champions League in 2020-21. His career at Chelsea, however, was hindered by injuries, and he joined Italian club AC Milan before the 2023-24 season. He is the all-time leading American scorer in the Champions League and in the top five European leagues (English Premier League, French Ligue 1, German Bundesliga, Spanish La Liga, and Italian Serie A).
Christian began his national team career at 17. He has helped the United States win the CONCACAF Nations League title three times and was named the tournament's best player in 2023. He is currently tied with Landon Donovan with a record four U.S. Player of the Year awards, and at the age of 27 is the fifth all-time leading goal scorer in U.S. National Team history. He has appeared for the U.S. National Team 86 times (as of the first World Cup match in 2026), and has scored 31 goals in those games.
For several years, Christian has been widely recognized as the face of American soccer, even earning the nickname "Captain America." He has generally performed very well for the national team, even during stretches when his club team's form has been less stellar. At the age of 27, he still has plenty of time to add to his record for both club and country.
Christian Pulisic's Religious Beliefs
Christian is a practicing Christian who has regularly commented on his faith and his relationship with God. For example, earlier in his career at Chelsea, he spoke about how his faith helped him cope with the loneliness and challenges of adapting to his situation there. In 2022, he also commented on the cross he wears (a gift from his mom), saying that it helps him feel that God is with him all the time and that his mom is with him as well. Christian has also discussed how his faith helps him as he deals with injuries or significant team defeats, reminding him that God has a purpose and is working in his life in every situation.
Christian has been active in promoting youth soccer through the PUMA x Christian Pulisic Legacy Program and his personal foundation. This includes donating and designing the 'Pulisic Stomping Grounds,' a state-of-the-art mini-pitch training facility in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, near his hometown of Hershey. He also joined his AC Milan teammates in promoting The Alice for Children Association, an initiative that helps young girls in Nairobi, Kenya, recognize their strength and self-worth through sports participation.
Christian Pulisic is a marvelous soccer player, but he is also a positive example of how believers can reflect and discuss their faith as a central part of their lives. By being willing to talk about the importance of prayer or the meaning behind favorite Scripture passages, Christians allow God to use their fame and platform to give people a healthy view of the role of faith in our daily lives.
