As the son of a football coach, Garrett moved 12 times as a child across eight states and Canada. Over his junior and senior years at Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas, he passed for close to 7,000 yards and over 60 touchdowns. That stellar production earned him scholarship offers at Baylor, Georgia, Miami, Michigan State, North Carolina, Penn State, Texas and Texas A&M, before he chose to go to LSU.

Unfortunately for the progress of his athletic career, it took three years for Nussmier to compete for the starting role, as he competed with Myles Brennan and current Washington Commanders’ standout quarterback Jayden Daniels. Today, in his senior year, Garrett Nussmeier has the opportunity to lead the LSU Tigers into bowl season.

His promise is resounding across Louisiana for someone who has a fill-in career of 10-4 to date. Even EA Sports has recognized his potential, rating him a 92 in College Football 26. That’s high praise considering the army of analysts and coaches who determine gaming athletes’ priorities.

A pocket passer like his father was at Idaho University and eventually with the New Orleans Saints, Garrett is known less for his legs and more for his rocket launcher of an arm and skilled accuracy.

Garrett Nussmeier’s Religious Beliefs

Garrett Nussmier is among the leading college quarterbacks who choose to make his eye paint a witnessing tool. Wearing a cross on each side of his face, Nussmeier allows his faith to be connected with his public identity.

During the 2024 SEC Media Days, reporters asked him about his place on the Tigers’ roster and why he chose to stay in Baton Rouge instead of entering the Transfer Portal. His words clearly established his faith.

“When I was making my decision out of high school of where to go to school, I felt like there was a lot of prayer involved, and God brought me to LSU for a reason,” said Nussmeier. “I did not feel like it was my time to just pack up and leave. I felt like it was my duty to just keep my head down, trust in His timing and just work. I know God’s timing is always right.”

Also like his father, Doug, faith in Jesus is paramount to his career and identity. Both understand God’s providence and how that relates to their sporting goals and open doors of opportunity.

“I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to step into some pretty tough situations,” Nussmeier said later at SEC Media Days. “I feel like they’ve only made me better as a player. And now getting the experience — and the preparation as well — as a starter, I think it’ll only help even more. I’ve been thrown into some tough situations, but it’s only made me better, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”
