Nicknamed “Moose” for his sturdy build, steady demeanor, and deep Maine roots, Sam Morse is a veteran American downhill skier known for patience, precision, and resilience. Born and raised just minutes from Sugarloaf Mountain, Morse was introduced to skiing at just 23 months old, beginning a lifelong connection to speed events and alpine racing. Growing up seven minutes from the slopes allowed skiing to become a daily rhythm rather than a seasonal pursuit, shaping both his technical base and mental approach.

Morse followed his older brother Ben's path to become one of the premier ski racing programs in the country and the alma mater of an Olympic champion. At CVA, Morse emerged as a dominant junior racer, earning recognition for his composure and ability to handle high-speed terrain. In 2014, he joined the U.S. Ski Team and quickly established himself as the top downhiller in his age group nationwide, earning the Golden Ski Award as the best junior skier in the Eastern United States.

His early promise translated onto the international stage when he finished fourth in the downhill at the 2014 Junior World Championships in Sochi, raced on the Olympic track. Morse’s true breakthrough arrived in 2017, when he captured the FIS Junior World Championships downhill title in Åre, Sweden. The victory marked a milestone moment not only for Morse but also for the U.S. team, as part of a historic gold medal sweep.

Rather than relying on reckless aggression, Morse has built his career through a patient, methodical progression. Known for valuing course knowledge and technical refinement, he steadily climbed the World Cup ranks. In December 2020, he earned his first World Cup points with a 29th-place finish in Val Gardena, Italy, a key marker of his arrival as a consistent World Cup competitor. As a speed specialist, he continues pursuing the elusive goal of becoming the first American to win the FIS World Cup downhill title.

Outside of racing, Morse is deeply connected to the outdoors. A registered Maine Guide, he leads wilderness trips and regularly engages in whitewater kayaking, wilderness canoeing, rock climbing, camping, and mountain biking. His life beyond skiing reflects the same discipline and respect for nature that defines his approach to competition.

Faith plays a central role in Morse’s identity and athletic journey. Raised in a Christian home, he has described his faith as “the glue that holds it all together,” providing purpose, perspective, and grounding amid the demands of elite competition. Morse founded and directs FAST (Faith and Ski Training) Camps, a faith-based ski racing program held annually at Mount Hood, designed to help young athletes grow both spiritually and competitively. He is also a speaker for Camps Farthest Out, a Christian family camp organization, and regularly volunteers with Winter Special Olympics events at Sugarloaf.

Morse’s routines reflect both humility and tradition. Before each race, his parents kiss the top of his helmet—a nod to the “lucky egg” scene from Cool Runnings—and he always delivers double fist pumps to his ski technician before leaving the start gate.

In 2025, Morse competed in his first FIS Alpine World Championships, finishing 36th in the men’s downhill. He has since been nominated to represent Team USA at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, marking the realization of a lifelong dream and the next chapter in a career built on faith, patience, and perseverance.
