Pat McAfee is a sports media personality, former NFL punter, former professional wrestler and broadcaster. Best known as the host of The Pat McAfee Show and a prominent analyst on ESPN's College GameDay, McAfee has built one of the largest personalities in modern sports media following a successful seven-year NFL career with the Indianapolis Colts. Known for his outspoken style, humor and high-energy broadcasts, he has also worked as a WWE commentator and occasional in-ring performer.

McAfee was born in Plum, Pennsylvania, to Tim and Sally McAfee. Growing up outside Pittsburgh, he excelled in multiple sports, including football, soccer and volleyball while attending Plum High School. His powerful kicking leg quickly attracted national attention. As a sophomore, he won the National Punt, Pass and Kick competition, establishing himself as one of the nation's top kicking prospects.

One of the defining moments of his high school career came during his senior year when he used money won in a poker game to travel to a national kicking competition in Miami. His performance caught the attention of West Virginia University recruiting coordinator Tony Gibson, who offered him a scholarship. McAfee later enrolled at West Virginia, where he majored in communications.

McAfee became one of college football's top specialists during his career at West Virginia from 2005 to 2008. He handled both punting and kicking duties while helping lead the Mountaineers to multiple bowl appearances and earning First-Team All-American honors in 2008.

Although he was not invited to the NFL Combine, the Indianapolis Colts selected him in the seventh round with the 222nd overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. He immediately became the team's punter and kickoff specialist and played in Super Bowl XLIV during his rookie season.

Over seven NFL seasons, McAfee established himself as one of the league's premier punters. He was selected to two Pro Bowls, in 2014 and 2016, earned First-Team All-Pro honors in 2014 and finished his career averaging 46.4 yards per punt. He retired following the 2016 season at age 29, choosing to pursue opportunities in broadcasting.

Following his retirement, McAfee quickly transitioned into sports media. After a stint with Barstool Sports, he launched The Pat McAfee Show, a sports talk program known for unscripted conversations, athlete interviews and humorous commentary. The show's popularity grew through YouTube and SiriusXM before eventually reaching a licensing agreement with ESPN, where it is simulcast while maintaining its independent format.

McAfee has also become a prominent ESPN personality through his role as an analyst on College GameDay and his college football coverage.

Beyond broadcasting, McAfee pursued professional wrestling with WWE. He joined the company in 2019, working as both a color commentator and occasional wrestler. He competed in several high-profile matches and became known for bringing his athleticism and energetic personality to WWE programming.

McAfee married Samantha Ludy in 2020 after several years of dating. The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, in 2023. Although McAfee occasionally discusses his family on his show, he generally keeps much of his personal life private.

McAfee has also supported a number of charitable causes. In 2020, he donated $200,000 to the Barstool Fund, which helped small businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. He later donated millions of dollars to causes including athletic programs at West Virginia University, children's health care and youth football initiatives in Indianapolis.

McAfee has increasingly spoken publicly about his spiritual journey, although he has described himself as still exploring his faith rather than presenting himself as someone who has all the answers.

During a 2026 appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, McAfee discussed his growing interest in Christianity and his thoughts about Jesus Christ.

"I love the thought of Jesus Christ," McAfee said. "I'm in the middle of my journey."

McAfee said conversations with people around him, reading and his own life experiences have prompted him to think more seriously about faith. He also suggested that Christianity is sometimes misunderstood or poorly represented by those claiming to speak for it.

While McAfee has expressed admiration for Jesus and an increasing openness to Christianity, he has not publicly identified with a specific Christian denomination or described a formal conversion experience. Instead, he has characterized his spiritual life as an ongoing search for truth and understanding. His comments indicate that Christian belief has become a more meaningful part of that journey, while he continues to emphasize that he is still learning and exploring what faith means to him.
