Academy Award-winning actress Mikey Madison has had a busy acting career since her early teens. From comedy to drama, film noir to animation, and short features to full-length films, the young Jewish actress has done it all.

Born in Los Angeles on March 25, 1999, Mikey – aka Mikaela Madison Rosberg – first appeared in two short films, Retirement and Pani's Box, in 2013. Another short film, Bound for Greatness, soon followed. At age 16, Madison landed a major role in the television comedy-drama Better Things, which aired on FX from 2016 to 2022. She played a volatile teenager being raised by a single mother alongside two sisters. The show was a critical success and received a Peabody Award, which recognizes excellence in radio, television and other electronic media.

The budding actress also appeared in Bravo's dark comedy Imposters, which aired for two seasons (2017-2018), and she landed roles in two dramatic films -- Monster and Nostalgia -- in 2018. During this time, she also garnered significant recognition for portraying a fictionalized version of Susan "Sadie" Atkins, a member of the notorious Manson family, in director Quentin Tarantino's 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim.

The same year, Madison voiced the barista in The Addams Family animated feature, and the following year, she received recognition for her role as Amber Freeman in the fifth Scream movie. In 2024, Madison appeared in the noir thriller Lady in the Lake, starring Natalie Portman and Moses Ingram.

But Madison's breakout role was that of Anora in the film of the same name. Anora follows the story of a stripper and sex worker who marries into a wealthy Russian family. Filmmaker Sean Baker wrote the part especially for Madison and selected her without requiring an audition. Madison prepared for the role by studying Russian, learning pole dancing, and temporarily moving to Brooklyn's Brighton Beach, where the film was set.

Anora received critical acclaim at its 2024 Cannes Film Festival premiere. Madison took home the BAFTA for Best Actress in a Leading Role, as well as the Academy Award for Best Actress. (BAFTAs are presented annually by the British Academy of Film and Television.)

The film received six major Academy Award nominations and won in five categories: Best Actress (Madison), Best Picture, Best Director, Best Film Editing and Best Original Screenplay. The American Film Institute and the National Board of Review also named Anora one of the top 10 films of the year, and the film received the Palme d'Or, which is awarded annually to the director of the Best Feature Film at Cannes.

More recently, Madison returned to television to guest-host Saturday Night Live in March 2025 and was chosen to play whistleblower Frances Haugen in the upcoming film The Social Reckoning. The movie is a sequel to The Social Network, which hit theaters in 2010 and told the story of Facebook's creation. The new film focuses on Haugen, who leaked internal Facebook documents, and it describes the impact that Facebook has had on politics and people's mental health. It's scheduled for release in October 2026.

Is Mikey Madison Religious?

Other than being an actress, who is Mikaela Madison Rosberg?

She is the fourth child of two psychologists. Her father, Dr. Michael Rosberg, specializes in treating patients with schizophrenia, and her mother, Dr. Tracy Rosberg, works in the field of child psychology. Madison has two sisters and two brothers, one of whom is her twin, and she continues to live in the Los Angeles area as an adult.

The Rosberg children were raised as non-practicing Jews in California's San Fernando Valley. Consequently, the actress isn't particularly religious as an adult, though she considers herself spiritual. She has said she didn't attend Hebrew school, nor did she have a bat mitzvah, which is a coming-of-age ceremony for Jewish girls. And she has expressed regret for missing out.
