Jamal Murray is a Canadian basketball player born on February 23, 1997, in Kitchener, Ontario, about 62 miles from Toronto. Both of his parents were born outside of Canada. His mother, Sylvia, is from Syria, and his father, Roger, was born in Jamaica.

Murray was involved in basketball and other sports from a young age. His family says he began playing basketball at the age of three, and by the time he was six, he played in a league intended for 10-year-old boys. Later, he played pick-up games with high school and college students when he was 12. Murray’s father, a fan of Bruce Lee, also encouraged him to study kung fu and meditation.

Murray has said that studying Bruce Lee influenced his approach to basketball and other sports.

Not surprisingly, Murray thrived as a student athlete. He started high school at Grand River Collegiate Institute in Kitchener but soon transferred to Orangeville Prep, where his father worked as an assistant basketball coach. Together with Thon Maker, who now plays in the NBA G League, Murray turned the Orangeville Prep team into a powerhouse that defeated teams throughout Canada and the United States.

Murray earned several awards and recognitions as a high school athlete, including MVP of the 2013 Jordan Brand Classic International Game, MVP of the 2015 Nike Hoop Summit, and MVP of the 2015 BioSteel All-Canadian Basketball Game.

College Career and NBA Draft

In 2015, Murray committed to attend the University of Kentucky, where he would play under head coach John Calipari. He immediately distinguished himself as a team leader. As a freshman, he played in 36 games, averaging 20 points per game, the highest average for a freshman player in the school’s history.

Jamal Murray didn’t stay at the university for long, though. In 2016, he declared for the NBA Draft.

Professional Career with the Denver Nuggets

The Denver Nuggets had Murray as their seventh overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. He signed a contract with the team later that year.

Murray delivered impressive performances during his first few years, scoring a career-high 38 points in a 2018 game against the Portland Trail Blazers. He sank a three-point shot in the game's final moments, leading the Nuggets to a narrow win (104-101).

Murray became a free agent in 2019, but the Nuggets quickly signed him to a five-year deal worth $170 million. He continued to thrill fans with last-minute and last-second shots that secured close wins for the Nuggets.

In 2021, Murray broke his earlier record by scoring 50 points in a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Unfortunately, Jamal Murray injured the ACL in his left knee and had to undergo surgery. Recovery prevented him from playing in the 2021-2022 season. The Nuggets suffered from the loss, winning fewer games than they had with him on the court.

After taking a year off from competitive basketball, Jamal Murray returned on October 19, 2022, to face the Utah Jazz. The Nuggets lost the game, but Murray scored 12 points in the first 26 minutes.

During a February game against the Atlanta Hawks, Murray scored 41 points, his highest of the season. A month later, he completed his 805th career three-pointer, making him the all-time three-pointer leader in Nuggets history.

His career in the NBA has earned him numerous accolades, including:

Personal Life

Jamal Murray has been in a long-term relationship with Harper Hempel, whom he met when they were students at the University of Kentucky. In 2025, he revealed that he and Hempel had become parents.
