- Fun Faith Fact!: The resemblance between Menzel and her on-screen daughter, Lea Michele, who plays the character Rachel Berry is what prompted their mother daughter relationship to be written into the plot of “Glee.”
Idina Menzel started worked as a wedding and bar mitzvah singer when she was 15 years old and went on to Broadway musicals such as Rent and Wicked. In addition to her long term singing career in which she has produced many singles and solo albums, she has acted in films such as Kissing Jessica Stein and as the voice of Elsa in Frozen. She also plays Shelby Corcoran in the TV series Glee.
Menzel was married to her Rent co-actor Tay Diggs for 10 years but they divorced in 2014. They have one son together, Walker Nathaniel. Menzel identifies herself as a feminist and has said “I love that I play all of these strong women-they have a deep vulnerability and need to go through a journey to harness their power.” She and her now ex-husband founded “A BroaderWay Foundation” in 2010 to help support young people in the arts by providing scholarships and opportunities to experience professional performances. She is also supporter of the LGBT movement and has partnered with organizations such as “The Trevor Project” and “NOH8 Campaign.”
