- Faith: Buddhist
- Career: Spiritual Leader
- Birthday: July 06, 1935
Tenzin Gyatso, known as the 14th Dalai Lama, was born on July 6, 1935, in a small farming village in Tibet. When he was just two years old, Buddhist leaders recognized him as the new Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet. As a child, he began training to lead, learning about Buddhist teachings and how to serve others with kindness.
When he was 15 years old, he became the full spiritual and political leader of Tibet during a time of growing tension in the region. At age 23, he was forced to flee to India for safety. There, he built a new home for himself and other Tibetans who followed him into exile, continuing to guide them in faith and hope.
Throughout his life, the Dalai Lama has stood for nonviolence, compassion, and peace. He has encouraged his people to seek freedom and cultural preservation through peaceful actions, not war. His gentle strength and commitment to nonviolence led to him being recognized around the world as a champion of peace.
In 1989, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his dedication to nonviolence and his leadership in advocating for the rights of the Tibetan people. Even though he stepped down from political leadership in 2011 to focus on spiritual guidance, he continues to inspire people worldwide.
As he has grown older, the Dalai Lama has spoken about the future of his role. He believes the people of Tibet should have a say in how the next Dalai Lama is chosen and has said the next Dalai Lama may be a woman or born outside of Tibet. This shows his dedication to serving people, not holding on to power.
