Nicole Kidman is a producer and actress. Known for her work in television productions and film across various genres, she’s consistently ranked among the world’s highest-paid actresses. Her accolades include an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, six Golden Globe Awards, and others. She became the first Australian actor to receive the AFI Life Achievement Award honor in 2024. Kidman started her career in Australia with the 1983 movie “BMX Bandits.” Her breakthrough came with lead roles in the miniseries “Bangkok Hilton” and “Dead Calm.”

Kidman was born in 1967 in Honolulu, Hawaii, while her Australian parents were temporarily in the U.S. on student visas. Having been born in the U.S. to Australian parents, Kidman holds dual citizenship in the United States and Australia. She said that she first aspired to become an actress after watching Margaret Hamilton’s performance as the Wicked Witch of the West in “The Wizard of Oz.” She shared that she was shy as child. During her teenage years, she attended the Phillip Street Theatre alongside fellow actress Naomi Watts.

She gained international fame with a supporting role in “Days of Thunder” and soon gained greater recognition with starring roles in “Far and Away,” “To Die For,” “Eyes Wide Shut,” “The Others,” and “Cold Mountain.” She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf in “The Hours,” receiving further Oscar nominations for “Moulin Rouge!,” “Rabbit Hole,” “Lion,” and “Being the Ricardos.” In addition to other mainstream projects like “Australia,” “The Golden Compass,” “Paddington,” “Bombshell,” and “Aquaman,” she’s known for her work in small-scale and often experimental productions like “Birth,” “Dogville,” “The Paperboy,” “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” and “Boy Erased.”

Kidman’s TV roles include “Top of the Lake: China Girl,” “Hemingway & Gellhorn,” “The Undoing,” “Nine Perfect Strangers,” and “Special Ops: Lioness.” For the HBO series “Big Little Lies,” she received Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress and Outstanding Limited Series as executive producer. Kidman has served as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF since 1994 and UNIFEM since 2006. She was appointed Companion of the Order of Australia in 2006. Kidman was married to Tom Cruise from 1990 to 2001 and has been married to country musician Keith Urban since 2006. In 2010, Kidman founded the production company Blossom Films, and in 2004 and 2018, Time included her on its list of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2020, The New York Times named her one of the greatest actors of the 21st century.

Kidman was first married to actor Tom Cruise from 1990 to 2001. In 2005, she met country musician Keith Urban at an event honoring Australians in the United States. They married on June 25, 2006, in a traditional Catholic ceremony held at the Cardinal Cerretti Memorial Chapel in Sydney. The marriage produced two daughters: Sunday Rose, born in 2008 and Faith Margaret, born in 2010.

Over the years, Kidman and Urban navigated public scrutiny, career demands, and personal challenges. Urban has openly talked about his struggles with alcohol, and Kidman has often been described as a supportive partner during his path to recovery.

In September 2025, after nearly two decades of marriage, Kidman filed for divorce from Urban following a separation.

What religion is Nicole Kidman?

Kidman was raised in a Catholic family and has maintained a connection to Catholic traditions. She attended Mary MacKillop Chapel in North Sydney and has publicly affirmed the importance of her faith in interviews. Her Catholic background remains a foundational lens through which she views life and art.

Throughout her career, Kidman has sometimes confronted tensions between her faith and certain roles. After criticism from Catholic leaders regarding her role in “The Golden Compass” and anti-Catholic, Kidman told Entertainment Weekly that the source material had been “watered down a little” and that her religious beliefs would stop her from taking a role in a movie she perceived as anti-Catholic.

Kidman and Urban once shared, though not identically, a religious journey. While she has long identified with Catholicism, Urban’s faith has been more personal and less doctrinal. During their years together, Kidman often spoke of attending church with Urban and their two daughters. In a 2019 interview, she explained, “That’s how we are raising our children. Keith has his own beliefs but he comes, too.” Their 2006 wedding ceremony was explicitly Catholic, underscoring Kidman’s devotion to her tradition. Urban’s music also reflected spiritual themes at times, as heard in songs like “But for the Grace of God” and “God Whispered Your Name.”
