Madison Keys was born on February 17, 1995, in Rock Island, Illinois. She is the daughter of Rick and Christine Keys. Along with Madison, they also have three other daughters named Sydney, Montana, and Hunter.

Madison owes much of her early-career encouragement to her parents. Her father, Rick, played Division III college basketball at Augustana College, but Madison's true inspiration was Venus Williams. One day, at the age of four, she was watching television and saw Venus competing at Wimbledon. You'd think Madison was immediately drawn to tennis. But she was impressed by the pretty dress Venus was wearing.

Regardless of her introduction to the sport, Madison's parents supported her interest by buying her a racquet and having her hit against the wall. Her mother, Christine, made another sacrifice, moving her daughters to Boca Raton, Florida, when Madison was nine. They moved so Madison could attend Evert Tennis Academy. Christine's selfless decision helped her and Madison develop a close bond that remains intact today.

Madison repaid her family's sacrifices by winning the Junior Orange Bowl at the age of 12. Two years later, Madison became a professional tennis player. Additionally, at 14, she became one of the youngest players to win a WTA (Women's Tennis Association) Tour-level match. From there, she earned a career record of 450-246 and a 2026 record of 29-12. Currently, she's ranked as the 23rd-best women's tennis player globally, with a career-high ranking of No. 5 achieved in 2025. Many believe she'd have a higher ranking if not for injuries.

Despite the physical setbacks, Madison has won 11 WTA Tour Singles titles. These include being a two-time Eastbourne title winner, the 2019 Cincinnati Open Champion, and the 2025 Australian Open Champion. Thanks to her championship efforts, she's accumulated $24,795,922 in prize money.

Her coach and husband, Bjorn Fratangelo, is a former professional tennis player who won the 2011 French Open boys title before injuries cut his playing career short. The couple married in November 2024.

Off the court, Madison enjoys spending time with friends and family, baking, planting, interior design, shopping, and doing philanthropic work.

Madison chooses not to take this approach; instead, she uses her platform to promote kindness and social responsibility. This philosophy is evident in her role as an ambassador for Fearlessly Girl, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering women and ensuring kindness is foundational in one's family, school, community, and professional life.

In 2020, Madison used her experience with Fearlessly Girl to launch her own nonprofit, Kindness Wins. This organization exists to promote kindness among three groups: youth, oneself, and those enduring hardships. Their compassion radiates through the organization's willingness to grant youth access to sports and educational opportunities, and to support their efforts to make the world a kinder place. Being intentional about serving young people in this capacity helps them prove that Kindness Wins.
