Josh Kushner is an American businessman, venture capitalist and entrepreneur best known as the founder of Thrive Capital and co-founder of health insurance company Oscar Health. A member of the prominent Kushner family, he is the younger brother of Jared Kushner, who served as a senior White House adviser during Donald Trump’s first administration, and the husband of model and entrepreneur Karlie Kloss.

Joshua Kushner was born June 12, 1985, in Livingston, New Jersey, to real estate developer Charles Kushner and Seryl Kushner. He grew up with three siblings, including older brother Jared, in a wealthy Jewish family with deep roots in the New York and New Jersey real estate business. His paternal grandparents, Joseph and Rae Kushner, were Holocaust survivors from what is now Belarus. Rae escaped from the Novogrudok ghetto during World War II and lived with the Bielski partisans before eventually immigrating to the United States.

Kushner attended Harvard University, where he began experimenting with entrepreneurship. As an undergraduate, he helped launch Vostu, a social gaming and networking company focused on Latin America, and later co-founded Unithrive, a service designed to connect college students with alumni willing to provide interest-free loans. He graduated from Harvard College in 2008 with a degree in government and later earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 2011.

After college, Kushner briefly worked in the private equity division of Goldman Sachs before moving into venture capital. In 2009, he founded Thrive Capital, a New York-based investment firm focused largely on technology, software and internet companies.

Thrive became one of the technology sector’s most prominent venture firms. One of its early successes came from an investment in Instagram shortly before Facebook acquired the photo-sharing company in 2012. Thrive has since invested in major companies including Stripe, Spotify, Instacart and OpenAI. The firm continued to expand rapidly, raising a $5 billion fund in 2024 and another $10 billion in new funding in 2026.

Kushner also co-founded Oscar Health in 2012 with Mario Schlosser and Kevin Nazemi. Created as a technology-focused health insurer, Oscar began offering coverage as the Affordable Care Act’s insurance marketplaces were taking effect. Kushner has remained involved with the company as vice chairman and a member of its board.

His other business interests have included co-founding the real estate technology company Cadre with his brother Jared and holding investments in professional sports.

In August 2026, Kushner and former Disney CEO Bob Iger agreed to purchase the Los Angeles Lakers in a deal valuing the NBA franchise at $12.5 billion, reportedly the highest price ever paid for a North American sports franchise. 

Kushner began dating model Karlie Kloss in 2012. The couple became engaged in 2018 and married that October in an intimate ceremony in upstate New York. They held a larger wedding celebration in Wyoming the following year.

Kushner and Kloss have three children. Their first son, Levi, was born in 2021, followed by their second son, Elijah, in 2023. Their daughter, Rae Florence, was born in September 2025. Despite their high-profile careers and family connections, Kushner and Kloss have generally kept their children and family life relatively private.

Kushner is Jewish and was raised in an observant Orthodox Jewish household in Livingston, New Jersey. Judaism has long played an important role in the Kushner family, whose history is closely connected to the experience of the Holocaust. His paternal grandparents were Holocaust survivors, and Jewish institutions in New Jersey have been named in their honor.

Although Kushner generally keeps his personal religious practices out of the public spotlight, his Jewish background has remained an important part of his family life. Before marrying him, Kloss converted to Judaism in 2018. The couple then married in a Jewish ceremony that October.
