Born Richard Lee Jemison III, the young man from Birmingham, Alabama, would become known as “Trey.” Trey always showed high-performing basketball skills and attended three schools in Alabama: Ramsay High School, Homewood High School, and Hoover High School. In 2016, with Homewood, he was a member of the Alabama State Championship high school team. He spent his senior year at Hoover, averaging 19 points, 15 boards, and 5 blocks per game.

Although Harvard and the Alabama Crimson Tide showed interest in the three-star high school recruit, Jemison chose to play for Clemson, where he had a decent career playing in South Carolina. He played for the Tigers for two years until he entered the transfer portal for his hometown team, the University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers, for the 2020-2021 season.

At UAB, his career finally shined, and he led the team in total rebounds (252) and blocks (52) during the season. During his last year playing for the team, he averaged 9.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game as a senior. His 329 rebounds set a single-season record for the Blazers, which had him selected for the All-Conference USA third and All-Defensive teams in 2023.

The 6’10” and 260-pound player went undrafted in the 2023 NBA draft but would later join the Phoenix Suns Summer G-League team. That September, he signed with the New Orleans Pelicans and later played with their summer league team, the Birmingham Squadron. During his career, Jemison has been a frequent traveler between teams. In 2024, he was traded three times—once to the Washington Wizards, then to the Memphis Grizzlies, and eventually back to New Orleans. In January of 2025, he ended up with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he plays with Lebron James and Luka Doncic, who was recently traded to L.A. by the Dallas Mavericks.

Trey Jemison's Religious Beliefs

Trey Jemison III is a bold believer in Jesus Christ and has no problem witnessing that love to anyone who needs to hear it. A devout Christian who regularly hosts Bible studies via his Instagram account, he was quoted in Relevant Magazine about his fervor for proclaiming the truth.

“There’s no way I should be in the NBA,” he said. “There’s no way I should be 6’10. There’s no way I should be with the Lakers right now. When God opens doors for me, I have to remember who brought me here. So my platform is used to impact people’s lives.”

During his online Bible studies, he encourages fans who stream live to read along, learn about Jesus, and participate with questions.

Furthermore, in high school, he wasn’t sure he had a future in basketball. Instead of quitting the team, he prayed, and he says that his faith led him back to the game he loved.

“Basketball is temporary, but God’s Word lasts forever,” he recently posted.
