Even though Colin Firth has been acting since the mid 80's, it was his portrayal of Mr. Darcy in Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice in 1995 that caught the eye of the world. Roles in The English Patient, the Bridget Jones films, Love Actually, and eventually The King's Speech - just to name a few.
