Calista Flockhart has lived all over the United States, since her father's job meant they moved around quite a bit. She often performed for her friends and family, and was avery outgoing child. They settled in New Jersey in her teens, and she would go on to attend Rutgers University, where she was officially bitten by the acting bug.

After college, she moved to New York City and shared a 2-bedroom apartment with 3 other women while working odd jobs in between bit parts. She moved to Los Angeles for the Ally McBeal part, her breakout role. Other larger roles in television and feature films followed.
