- Fun Fact: Dickey is an avid reader who names his bats after literary swords including Orcrist from “The Hobbit” and Hrunting from “Beowulf.” His at-bat introduction song is the “Game of Thrones” theme song.
R.A. Dickey was born in Nashville, Tennessee and was first drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 1993 but he did not sign. Instead, he did not sign a contract until 1996 when he joined the Texas Rangers. His first season was disappointing, but he perfected his knuckleball and improved his pitching to become an excellent pitcher. His performance in the first half of 2012 was seen as one of the most dominant pitching streaks in the last 50 years. From a medical standpoint, however, his abilities should not be possible. His is missing the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow which means he “shouldn’t be able to turn a doorknob without feeling pain.”
