Hilary Duff was born in Houston, and took ballet classes and auditioned for local theater parts when she was a child. At age 6, she joined Haylie in a production of the Nutcracker Suite. The family moved to California, where she was homeschooled and managed by her mother.
She is best known for her lead role on a Disney Channel show, Lizzie McGuire, for two seasons, after which she reprised the role in The Lizzie McGuire Movie.
In 2003, Hilary Duff released her first non-Disney album, Metamorphosis, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard charts and went triple platinum.
