Terence "Bud" Crawford was raised in Omaha, the most populous city in Nebraska. His parents, Debbie and Terrence Sr., lived in an impoverished area of the city known for high crime rates. Crawford has been open about the hardships of his childhood, with a father in the US Navy who was often away from home, and a mother who regularly beat Crawford with a belt for getting hit in the ring when he trained. She often criticized him for not winning a match or told him he had won one because it was too easy. His father called him their "million-dollar baby." Outside of training, the future boxer regularly got into fights at school, and he was forced to switch schools five times.

At seven years old, he first began training in earnest at the CW Boxing Club, where his father, uncle, and grandfather had trained. There, Crawford met Brian "BoMac" McIntyre, who became one of his most important mentors. The fighter remains well-known in the CW community, including by its founder, Carl Washington, who considered Crawford's introduction to the club a way to keep the young fighter out of trouble. While mentors like McIntyre and Midge Minor were incredibly formative in shaping Crawford's fighting style, the boxer was also heavily influenced by his family. Crawford attributes his fighting spirit to his uncle Michael. But when interpersonal conflicts got dangerous, it was his uncle DeArthur who reminded him that there was a reason why God had not let the young Crawford die yet. Crawford met his partner, Alindra "Esha" Person, in their home city, Omaha. The couple has been together since the early 2000s. Today, Person and Crawford are raising six children together.

Crawford's 17-year-long career in professional boxing began in 2008, when he knocked out his opponent, Bryan Cummings, in the first round of the match. Throughout his career, Crawford remained undefeated, fighting across three weight classes, from light welterweight to super middleweight. In his 42 fights, Crawford had 31 knockouts. He fought and won 18 world championships. The boxer defeated fighters such as Yuriorkis Gamboa, Julius Indongo, Amir Khan, and Errol Spence Jr. Crawford's last major fight was against Canelo Álvarez on September 13, 2025.

Crawford beat Álvarez, thereby winning the undisputed world super middleweight title. Crawford retired after this fight in December 2025. His illustrious career earned Crawford several accolades from ESPN, the Boxing Writers Association of America, and The Ring.

The retired boxer has not always gone into depth about his faith. However, after victories, it is common for Crawford to give thanks and credit to God and Jesus. His victory against Álvarez is one such example. Because of his background and upbringing, Crawford identifies strongly with Jesus. Like Jesus, Crawford came from hardship and poverty.

Although Crawford has worked immensely hard to succeed in the ring, he believes that God has given him his fighting talent. He has described his faith as his oxygen. He views his success as a sign of God's favor and believes that God is using his journey to teach others that anything is possible through faith.
