Simon Cowell is an English television personality, record executive, producer and entrepreneur best known for creating "The X Factor" and "Got Talent" franchises and serving as a judge on shows including "American Idol," "Britain's Got Talent" and "America's Got Talent." Known for his blunt criticism of contestants, Cowell became one of the most recognizable figures in reality television while also helping launch the careers of numerous successful recording artists.

Simon Phillip Cowell was born October 7, 1959, in London, England, and grew up in Elstree, Hertfordshire. His mother, Julie Brett, was a ballet dancer and socialite, while his father, Eric Selig Phillip Cowell, worked as an estate agent, property developer and music industry executive. Cowell has a younger brother, Nicholas, as well as several half-siblings.

Cowell attended several schools, including Radlett Preparatory School and Dover College, but struggled with traditional education and left after completing his GCE O levels. He later attended Windsor Technical College, where he earned a GCE in sociology. After holding several jobs, Cowell entered the music industry through a mailroom position at EMI Music Publishing, where his father was an executive.

Cowell left EMI in the early 1980s and eventually co-founded Fanfare Records. The label found success with singer Sinitta, but financial problems caused the company to collapse in 1989, leaving Cowell facing serious financial difficulties. He rebuilt his career as an A&R consultant for BMG and later found major commercial success with acts including Westlife and the duo Robson & Jerome.

His career changed dramatically in 2001 when he became a judge on the British television competition "Pop Idol." Cowell's direct and sometimes harsh assessments of contestants made him a standout personality. In 2002, he joined the American version, "American Idol," where he remained through 2010 and became internationally famous.

Cowell created "The X Factor" in the United Kingdom in 2004 and later developed the "Got Talent" franchise. Through his television programs and music companies, he has been involved in the careers of artists including One Direction, Leona Lewis, Fifth Harmony, Little Mix, Susan Boyle and Il Divo. He has served as a longtime judge on both "Britain's Got Talent" and "America's Got Talent." In 2018, Cowell received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his work in television.

Cowell has had several high-profile relationships. He dated television presenter Terri Seymour from 2002 to 2008 and was briefly engaged to makeup artist Mezhgan Hussainy. In 2013, he began a relationship with Lauren Silverman. Their son, Eric, named after Cowell's late father, was born on February 14, 2014. Cowell and Silverman announced their engagement in 2022.

Cowell has said becoming a father significantly changed his priorities and outlook on life. He has also spoken publicly about health and lifestyle changes following a serious electric motorcycle accident in 2020 that left him with a broken back and required surgery.

Is Simon Cowell Religious?

Cowell does not publicly identify as a practicing member of a particular religion. His family background includes both Judaism and Christianity. His father came from a mostly Jewish family, while his mother came from a Christian background. Religion, however, does not appear to have played a dominant role in Cowell's upbringing.

His own statements about faith have evolved. Earlier in his career, Cowell expressed skepticism about belief in God. More recently, however, he has spoken openly about prayer and spirituality. In a 2026 interview, Cowell said he prays every night and believes in God, guardian angels and what he described as "the powers of the universe," viewing them as connected.

Cowell has also connected his spiritual beliefs with thoughts about death and his late loved ones. He said he hopes to go to heaven and be reunited with his parents, friends and former pets. While his beliefs do not fit neatly within a particular denomination or organized religious tradition, his recent comments indicate a personal belief in God, prayer, an afterlife and a broader spiritual dimension to life.
