Camila Cabello is a Cuban-born American singer and songwriter who first gained fame as a member of the girl group Fifth Harmony before launching a successful solo career. Known for hits including "Havana," "Señorita" and "Never Be the Same," Cabello has incorporated her Cuban and Mexican heritage into much of her music while becoming one of the most recognizable pop singers of her generation.

Karla Camila Cabello Estrabao was born on March 3, 1997, in Havana, Cuba, to Alejandro Cabello and Sinuhe Estrabao. Her father was born in Mexico City, while her mother is Cuban, and Cabello has described herself as Cuban-Mexican. She has a younger sister, Sofia.

Cabello spent her early childhood moving between Cuba and Mexico. When she was about 6 years old, she and her mother immigrated to the United States, traveling from Mexico to Miami, Florida. Her father initially remained behind because he could not obtain a visa and joined the family about 18 months later. Her mother, who had trained as an architect in Cuba, initially worked at a Marshalls store while learning English and eventually returned to work in her professional field. Cabello became a U.S. citizen in 2008.

She attended Miami Palmetto High School but left during ninth grade to pursue music, later earning her high school diploma.

Cabello's career began in 2012 when she auditioned for the U.S. version of "The X Factor." After being eliminated as a solo contestant, she was brought back with Ally Brooke, Normani, Lauren Jauregui and Dinah Jane to form the group that became Fifth Harmony. The group finished third on the competition and signed a recording deal. Fifth Harmony went on to score international hits including "Worth It" and "Work from Home."

While still with the group, Cabello began collaborating with other artists. She recorded "I Know What You Did Last Summer" with Shawn Mendes in 2015 and "Bad Things" with Machine Gun Kelly in 2016. Cabello left Fifth Harmony in December 2016 to pursue a solo career.

Her breakthrough came with "Havana," featuring Young Thug, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became an international hit. Her debut album, "Camila," was released in January 2018 and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The album also produced the hit "Never Be the Same."

Cabello reunited with Mendes for the 2019 duet "Señorita," which became another No. 1 hit. Her second album, "Romance," followed that year. She released "Familia" in 2022, featuring the Ed Sheeran collaboration "Bam Bam," and "C,XOXO" in 2024. Cabello also expanded into acting, playing the title role in the 2021 musical film "Cinderella," and served as a coach on "The Voice."

Cabello has been open about experiencing anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder and has discussed using therapy and other strategies to protect her mental health. Her personal life has also attracted significant media attention. She dated relationship coach and writer Matthew Hussey from 2018 to 2019 before beginning a high-profile relationship with Shawn Mendes. Cabello and Mendes announced their breakup in 2021, though they have periodically sparked speculation about reconciliation since then.

Cabello has also supported causes involving immigration, children's health, education and disaster relief. Her family's immigration experience has influenced her public advocacy on behalf of immigrants and refugees.

Camila Cabello's Religious Beliefs

Cabello has not publicly identified herself as a follower of a particular organized religion. Instead, she has spoken about spirituality and her interest in Buddhist philosophy as tools for handling anxiety, fame and the pressures of the entertainment industry.

During an appearance on the "Armchair Expert" podcast, Cabello said she was "really into Buddhism." She described using Buddhist ideas and mental practices to help remain calm and change the way she responds to difficult emotions and circumstances. Her comments suggest that she approaches Buddhism primarily as a source of philosophical and emotional guidance rather than publicly identifying herself as a practicing Buddhist.

Spiritual and religious imagery has also appeared in Cabello's music. Her 2019 song "Living Proof," for example, uses religious language and imagery, including references to "hallelujah," to portray romantic love in transcendent or divine terms. While Cabello has incorporated such themes into her work, she has not publicly aligned herself with a specific religious tradition.
