- Fun Fact: Barker is officially a member of the Sioux tribe and spent many of his younger years on the Rosebud Indian Reservation.
Bob Barker was born in Darrington, Washington and spent most of his younger years on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Barker’s father died when he was six years old, and the family moved to Missouri in 1931. When World War II broke out, Barker served as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Navy.
Barker’s first game show was “Truth or Consequences” in 1956, and he continued hosting it until it ended in 1974. It was there that a salute became his trademark sign-off. He is best known, however, for his role hosting “The Price Is Right” where he worked from 1972 until his retirement in 2007.
