Nick Ahmed is an MLB shortstop with a reputation for his outstanding defensive skills. He was born on March 15, 1990, in Springfield, Massachusetts, and grew up in East Longmeadow.

At East Longmeadow High School, Ahmed was a standout athlete. He earned Massachusetts State All-Star honors as a pitcher with a career record of 21–3. He also scored over 1,100 points in basketball and earned All-Western First Team honors.

Ahmed played baseball at the University of Connecticut while studying sports management. As a shortstop for the Huskies, he co-captained the team and earned praise for his strong defense.

In the 2011 MLB Draft, Ahmed was selected in the second round by the Atlanta Braves and, after two years in the minors, he joined the Arizona Diamondbacks. He made his MLB debut in 2014 and remained with the Diamondbacks for almost a decade. During that time, Ahmed earned Gold Glove Awards in 2018 and 2019 and became known as one of the league’s top defensive infielders.

Later, Ahmed played for the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Diego Padres. He signed a minor league contract in 2025 with the Texas Rangers but was released due to injuries.

As for Nick Ahmed’s personal life, he and his wife, Amanda (Coughlin) Ahmed, have three children. They have been active with Big League Impact and other non-profit charities to help families at home and abroad.

Nick Ahmed’s Religious Beliefs

Nick Ahmed attended St. Michael’s Parish Roman Catholic Church as a child. Even though he attended regularly, he admits he didn’t take it very seriously.

A pivotal moment came in 2013 while playing minor league baseball in Mobile, Alabama. One day, he felt overwhelmed by his personal and professional challenges and skipped his warm-up routine. He turned toward the outfield, closed his eyes, and prayed for guidance.

In that moment, he felt a sudden peace. He knew it was the presence of the Holy Spirit and a turning point. Since then, Ahmed has deepened his faith according to Christian principles. These days, his relationship with God is central.

His faith kept him going during the 2022 season when facing multiple health setbacks. A shoulder injury required surgery, and COVID-19 caught up with him. During recovery, he leaned on Scripture, prayer, and worship music to stay grounded. A passage that brought him comfort and helped him refocus his energy was 2 Corinthians 4:16-18:

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

His perspective has strengthened him and kept him steady during setbacks. In interviews, Ahmed has said that trusting God’s plan, even when things don’t go as expected, is what helps him most.

He’s definitely not shy about his beliefs. In 2024, for example, Ahmed wore a team-issued cap with “Genesis 9:16” written on it during Pride Night. He played for the San Francisco Giants at that time. The verse read:

“Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”

The inscription was a reminder that God loves everyone, Ahmed explained. The rainbow symbolizes inclusion. “I wanted to wear something that reflected who I am and what I believe. God’s love is for all people,” he said in an interview.

People reacted in a variety of ways, and many appreciated his respectful attitude, as he focused on the message and skipped the controversy.

Baseball isn’t everything for Ahmed. He lives his faith through action and speaks freely about following Christ’s teachings. He admits that he often falls short, but his teammates speak well of him and say he creates a positive team environment.

For Nick Ahmed, faith isn’t a performance. It’s a guiding principle. His faith has helped him get through the highs and lows of his career while remaining grounded in something bigger than the game.
