- fun faith fact! Cat Stevens changed his name to Yusef Islam
Cat Stevens, now known as Yusuf Islam, has had three names in his lifetime. The last is by far the most significant, even if it isn't the name that made him famous. The popular folk singer, writer and performer of "Peace Train" and "Wild World," converted to Islam in 1977 following his upbringing in an mixed Christian household and a Catholic school. Soon after he left his music career to focus on philanthropy and working within the Islamic community, earning him several awards for his effort. He returned to music in 2009, even appearing at Stephen Colbert' and Jon Stewart's Rally to Restore Sanity.
