The Stages of Food Addiction: Get Off the Bus Now!

Like other addictions, food addiction is a chronic and progressive disease. Get off the bus before it reaches its destination – death!

Early stage: Food addicts notice that they have a special attachment to food. It is their ‘best friend’.

Middle Stage: Food addicts know they have a problem with food and are trying to control themselves with dieting, medication, yoga, and therapy. They often have sought out professional help by this time.

Late Stage: Food addicts know by this time that they have no control over their eating. They often have diabetes, hypertension, and severe depression and are morbidly obese. If the disease continues, they typically die of these conditions.

What is the Treatment for Food Addiction?

The treatment is simple, though not easy: Avoid the foods that produce cravings. Stop the ‘drug’ that you are eating. That means stopping the chocolate, cake, cereal, bagels, popcorn and gummy bears. No more sugar in your coffee. No more soda.

A paleo or ‘real’ food meal plan often works as long as the food addict removes the natural sweeteners. Some people have to remove dairy, nuts or grains. Any food that sparks up the obsession to eat more of it is suspect and should be stopped. A successful food addict’s recovery meal plan is NOT a diet. There is no focus on calories. Recovering food addicts eat vegetables, fruit, fish, chicken, eggs, because these ‘real’ foods are not addictive.
